Thoughts on a potential trade

I recently bought a BLNR on an oyster band from my authorized dealer (AD). While it's a great watch, I'm beginning to feel like it overlaps too much with my Sub 41 Date and black ceramic Daytona.

My realtor has expressed interest in buying the BLNR for $18,000. I'm considering selling it, recouping my money, and potentially getting the new Air-King for free with my AD's help within the next month. My friend has an Air-King, and I borrowed it for a few weeks and enjoyed it.

I understand the Rolex community may not be fond of these kinds of questions, but I'd appreciate some input. Would you make this move? Essentially, I'd be getting an Air-King for free with this decision.

My current collection includes a Sub 41 Date, a black ceramic Daytona, a Speedmaster 3861 Hesalite, and the BLNR on an oyster band.

What do you all think?

If you're asking opinions, under no circumstances would I give up a BLNR for an AK and a few bucks. If you don't like the Batman that is another story. Sub Daytona and BLNR are the perfect trio. You do you!!

I’d keep the BLNR unless you need to release cash.

If you really like the idea of the AK for free and will love it by all means, but keep in mind that once the dust settle on the deal you may find yourself wanting again the BLNR and then getting that one back may prove way more difficult.

Good luck with your choice!

I totally support this.

18k is like full grey market price so you aren’t going to do better than that. Poor realtor….

Or maybe just get a jubilee for it and I doubt you would feel the overlap then

The suggestion of getting a jubilee is a great one if you’re really just after some diversity in the rotation.

That said, if you’re looking to unload the BLNR this offer will be hard to beat. I’ve got a 116710BLNR that I’m just sitting on because I can’t justify selling at todays prices. I’d much rather turn it into another piece so you’re in a very enviable position. Just make sure you’re moving it for the right reasons and are unlikely to regret on the other side of the transaction.

Take the 18k and put it toward a BLRO on jubilee - less overlap there!

Wait, is your Sub the LN? If so, move that for the AK.

OP, understand how you see the BLNR on Oyster overlapping with your SubDate41. If your BLNR was on jubilee, I think this wouldn't be an issue at all. Speaking from experience, as I have those two references (SubDate 11series), they look and wear completely different. Have you thought about ordering a jubilee from your AD?

If this is not something you want to do, then yes, I'd sell the BLNR if your SubDate is the keeper of the two. Good luck!

Take the 18k now and run, then figure out the rest later. That’s a great price and if you wanted to keep it you wouldn’t have made this post.

Definitely take the 18k and run. It’s a current production model, you can always get one again at retail.

The sub looks like the GMT from a few feet away
The GMT, sub and Daytona all have the same bracelet
The GMT, sub and Daytona all have black ceramic bezels, and the Speedmaster has a black aluminum bezel.
The GMT, sub, Daytona and Speedmaster All have black dials

My diagnosis: monotony

The Air King also has a black dial and same bracelet, but at least has a metal bezel.

You need a white/blue/green/champagne dial SS or TT datejust with fluted bezel and jubilee. That’ll fix your ailments.

This is exactly how I felt after buying my 124060. I wanted a BLNR, but it somehow felt so… similar. I borrowed a friend’s GMT for a couple days and it was beautiful but it felt like version 2.0 on the plain, no-date sub. Which is to say, it felt amazing, however I’m not sure I ‘needed’ it.

The next one I added was actually a Polar EXPII —the white dial, orange hand, the non-ceramic bezel… it all came together to feel completely different. More utilitarian. More under the radar (compared to a Sub, GMTII, DaytonaC) and still allowing the GMT functionality that I was after.

After that came the TT SkyD, champagne dial, jubilee bracelet. I was originally after stainless steel but this actually killed two birds with one stone: played the role of a “dressier” special occasion piece while having this super interesting movement I had been mesmerized by.

If you had asked me before I bought the sub what the next 4 watches would be they would have been exactly what you have: Sub, GMT, Daytona, Speedy. And I see now that the lack of variety, for me personally, would have eventually had me wondering about unloading one or two.

The irony is that we are still talking about only a single watch brand for the three watches I’ve referenced above. My little trio, despite mixing metals, complications, costs, etc are still fairly similar. I am looking to add some that are manual wind, or on a leather band/nato, or a chrono, or a perpetual calendar/moonphase, or something under 38mm. For me the differences are fun and I would strongly encourage mixing things up.

Your black dial collection is immaculate, but maybe it’s time to diversify?

I never liked the BLNR so an easy call.
Sell and buy the AK, the new one is looking great, add the monetary aspect and you can only win

U asked…… I’d say don’t. You may not have the opportunity for a long time. However, that is your quandary because It sounds like you’re not really taken with it.

For what it’s worth, I have heard from 2 AD’s, they won’t sell you a jubilee. “Rolex wants the watches to stay original. “

You can definitely buy a jubilee from an AD.

Did you even want the gmt? If you sell it I'd not feel good about taking his 18k and if you don't want it I'd hold off on any other purchases. Keep that money and spend it in the future on something else. You have lots of steel spots watches - the AK will be for sale after the honeymoon. I'd save up for something not rolex or PM.

If you want a GMT complication I’d sell the BLNR and use the money toward a BLRO on jubilee.

Doesn’t that realtor have the ability to get a BLNR from an AD at retail these days?

If you are bored with it and feel it overlaps too much then I vote sell. AK is definitely different that what you have plus as it’s essentially free and you like it why not. It’s good to mix it up.
