Rolex 16660 spider dial
Hello,
I would like to ask you again for an assessment and share my thoughts with you. I was offered a Rolex Sea Dweller 16660 from 1984 by a friend. The watch has a spider dial. The watch does not have any accessories. Not even a bracelet. I like the look of the dial, very special. But it also has its price. For that price, I would also get a 16660 in a full set in excellent condition. The question is whether it's worth it. On chrono, there are a few 16660s with spider dials. All of them are quite expensive. Is it just a damaged dial or worth a premium? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Best regards Alex |

I definitely wouldn't pay a premium for it. I'd prefer the normal one with box and papers if they're the same price, no doubt.

Can you post some good photos showing the distinctive features of the dial? You might have to take under the right type lighting. It's pretty hard to answer your question totally blind.
They are damaged dials, but I do like some of them. Others aren't appealing at all to me. Some sellers use the term to describe dials that don't even look like spider dials to me. And ultimately, very few would be worth a significant premium.

I’d rather buy a 16600 for 7-8k in good condition. They are out there and they should be more $$$!

I'm guessing this isn't a pre-8.5 million triple 6 matte dial as they didn't spider ordinarily.
The spider dial of 16750/5513/16660 etc tend to be the first two years of the post 8.5 million gloss white gold surround dials in my experience - ps I'm not keen on them either (though I do like so called stardust dials), these just look broken/damaged to my eyes !

Did the spider dial problem typically run into the R serial range?
Thanks - Tom |

Broadly yes, 85 - 87 (i.e.R) are the most common period of ones I've seen personally.
