An unexpected Datejust buddy at lunch

I rarely see Rolexes in my neck of the woods. A couple years ago, when I was "waiting for the text," I noticed a guy in line ahead of me at the convenience store was wearing a two-tone DJ 36. Another time I caught a glimpse of a gold DD at a big-box club store. Recently at work I noticed---probably because I was sitting, while he was standing in front of me--a former airline pilot with a nice old GMT Master.

Today, though, I went to lunch with a couple other guys of my somewhat unusual extended family. At a local joint the most local of us chose not a booth but a great round big table able to hold 6 or 8...and currently holding a single old-timer regular my dude only very vaguely knew of. I mean, sort of nod, hello, then back to our separate schticks. This is not my habit, but apparently they found nothing unusual.

After a short time I noticed the other fellow's Jubilee bracelet. "Seems legit," thought I. Later, trying not to gawk, I was pretty sure I clocked the fluted bezel. "Mm hmm..." I shrugged inwardly. Finally, then, I got a good glimpse of ye olde cyclops. "Yep, no doubt," I concluded...but, not wanting to be a "Box and papers, bro!" dingus, I said nought. He got up to pay.

In a moment, though, the old-timer came back, and I'll be durned if he didn't lean over and comment on MY watch! Yeah, so I mentioned that I of course had seen his and found it handsome, and we chatted for a sec. He said he'd been wearing his for 20-odd years and that he had had the former white dial switched to blue with diamonds some time ago. I said I absolutely loved blue. He wondered what a DJ cost nowadays, so I told him a solid 10, and I said how I hadn't decided on the fluted bezel until I actually had hands on one in the shop, but I sure was glad I did.

Anyhoo, no biggie, but a pleasant couple minutes of small-town Rolex camaraderie.

Oh, I wouldn't recognize something fancy like that, I'm sure--a watch simpleton like me has to keep it simple!

an entry level and no-frill Patek is much more simpler than a DJ, while costing as much as doubled.

Great story Rafeeq.

I don’t run into too many people here where I live either. An hour away, in the big smoke, they are quite common.

I have a similar blue dial 16234 that is 20 years old and very special to me.

Its funny because I had someone comment on my Seiko Turtle I wore the other day - watch guys are watch guys if its a $500 or $10000 watch.

Its cool because you instantly have something to talk about and chat.
