Suit

As a man who NEVER wears a suit, how much would a decent suit cost? I am NOT interested in an expensive suit or designer--in fact, I am interested in the least expensive route possible, simply something that would service for a few days and not be laughed at.

Also, where is the best to purchase said suit?

Thanks.

ahh, nothing like starting the day out by reading how JJ gave someone a new bag of ........well, you know.

i hate to say it, but Mens Warehouse or some other large operation...suits could be purchased(if you're a standard size) for $200. get something conservative, three button, black pin stripe, for example, and everyone will think it's an expensive suit........

Check out Jos A. Bank - they are ALWAYS having a sale! When they are not having a sale (which is rare) you can still get 20% off by signing up for their corporate discount. Their suits are quite durable!

I am not having too much good luck with my clothes from Brooks Brothers lately, so I am shying away from them. A good number of my shirts have ripped in the left arm at the elbow for some odd reason. These are $150 shirts and they split after a few wears. The Jos A. Bank shirts have been going strong for over a year now!

Cheers!

P.S. Nice suit Jen!

P.P.S Paul "Neck Constricter" that is hilarious!

X2 on the Joseph A Bank suites. They seem to be ALWAYS running those commercials on TV with the ultra friendly/happy guy recommending Joseph A Bank . . . "Sports coats up to 50% off, BUY ONE GET ONE FREE !!!!!!!!!!" etc. etc. You know those adds lol

$500 is a good price point, but you may want to consider spending a little extra to get it altered to fit you better. You'll be surprise what a difference a little alteration can do to how you look.

King, I am fortunate enough to work out of my home, my office just out of sight of the Pacific Ocean, however when I am called in to the office, or visiting out high-end clients, (ESPN, CNN) I do have to wear the neck constricter.... It generally sucks... I MUCH prefer sitting around my office in my pajamas... Anyway, the best advice I can give you is go to one of the sales at the men's wearhouse, and be prepared to spend a MINIMU of between two and three hundred bucks, for a decent suit that will last a while. They have excellent names and when they run specials, like half off, or reduced by $200 or something, you can get some pretty good deals on premium merchandise.

Good Luck!

Jen, I've tried--so hard--to not be one of those guys that appreciate you for your looks rather than the substance of your posts.

But, honey, you're making it really, really difficult!

You know, the thing is King, I don't know if you've had the pleasure (as I have) of meeting Lovely Jen in person, but her pictures do NOT do her justice! Hard to believe.... but definitely true!!!!

I have not had the pleasure, my friend, nor will I. However, I certainly take your word for it.

Maybe Jen will let you borrow her suit? You'll need nice legs, though.

Try Land's End. Reasonable quality and pretty inexpensive. If you don't like it you can get your money back easily.

You can't go wrong with Hugo Boss, they make really nicely cut suits. The red label definitely worth to check it out.

Another piece of advice, if you go to one of those stores like the Men's Warehouse, don't get the whole outfit there. Get the dress shirt and tie from some where else. You don't want to look like you got everything from the same place.

Jos. A Bank is definitely the place for an everday suit, conservative style, inexpensive and look good. Their Executive suits are the best bet for a fairly inexpensive suit and you wouldn't look like the guy who has only 1 suit from 20 years ago that everbody that wears suits would know right away.

I have to wear a suit occasionally for business and I've had great luck at Nordstrom. They seem to have frequent sales. I picked up a nice Hugo Boss suit for about $500 this summer and have worn it a number of times already.

Also depends upon your build. I'm "athletic" (also known as skinny) so makes like Hugo Boss and other designer suits work really well for me with minimal tailoring. But Nordstrom has something for everyone. I'll be wearing the Hugo Boss in New York next week for a Board Meeting. Nice thing about a contemporary suit is that you also look really good when you go out for dinner or whatever after the meeting.

I would also recommend Brooks Brothers for reasonably well-made suits that will last for a long time. They have a line of travel suits and they actually do wear very well. You can buy the pants and jackets seperately too in order to get a good fit. I think you can get these suits under $500, although Brooks Brothers also carries some higher-end stuff.

Men's Warehouse will get you into a suit, but I'd recommend you look at Nordstrom or another nice department store first and try out a few different brands to see what looks good on you. One size does not fit all and you should not trust any sales person that says "we can make it look good on you."

Good luck!

Edit: I just re-read your post, and you clearly said that you're not interested in a designer suit. I think I would still encourage you to try on a number of suits of all makes in order to see what complements your build. If the tailor must take out more than a little fabric in the pants and jacket to make it work, then the overall look will quickly go downhill. Remember the sales person wants you to buy so you might take a trusted friend along.

What E.Jumper said is very true...

I went shopping with my best friend for a suit a few weeks ago. He's a semi-giant (6'4") so not much in the store fit him. The sales girl had him try something on, and cooed over how great he looked when he came out. (It fit terribly).

I laughed, told him he looked like an idiot, and said we were leaving. But had I not been there... I'm sure she could have sold him on it.
