Stealth but correcting people?

Wearing my Smurf and a lot of people commenting on it like it’s a reg SS sub. I feel compelled to be like no no, it’s different Adam Levine - you see the blue face only came in WG. But then that kinda defeats the purpose of it being “under the radar”. Been finding it amusing.

That means the “under the radar” is working but I see why it is a bit irritating being a watch enthusiasts. I get that way with very specific high end car models.

I am in western pa . A few years ago, I had a nice dinan stage 3 550 and some guy at a gas station with a 530 walks over and says “your car looks similar to mine but what’s the difference?” “Like 275 horsepower”. He just said wow and walked back to his car. It made me laugh .

Just buy a YG sub and that problem goes away.

This is my take. I adore my Smurf. Very occasionally have I spotted someone eyeing it (not maliciously). To 99.9% of humans it is a watch. To 0.1% it’s a Rolex. To a fraction of that know it’s full WG. In fact, the biggest reaction I’ve ever gotten has been walking into my AD & him saying “wow a Smurf, I’ve only ever seen a handful of those!” And asked to handle it.

I feel your pain man, as my TT Sea-Dweller gets mistaken for a plebian Sub all the dang time!

It does reveal the true enthusiasts who get it right though.

You could get a hat made that says “My White GOLD ROLEX Watch Cost $42,000”

Then, just wear it everywhere you go.

It’s not the $ part tho. It’s the watch collector in me who wants my piece to be correctly discussed.

It’s a weird, passive-aggressive, humble brag…..Get over yourself!!! You got the watch you like, enjoy it. Why do you expect everyone who owns a watch to be a ROLEX enthusiast?

Maybe…maybe not. I correct people (when I know them) who assume my SD is a Sub.

My advice, not asked for, is to learn to not care how your 'things' are discussed by people you don't know and don't care about.

If you want to have a watch discussion, have an appropriate discussion. "Thanks for noticing my watch" honestly is plenty. If they have questions and you want to entertain them, do so. If you think they might want to hear more . . . you can engage. But just don't be "the watch jerk" who feels compelled to inform random strangers about their watch, whether it's about the $ or whatever else.

But to take it upon yourself to ensure that rando's "correctly discuss" your watch is way over the top IMHO. It's "watch jerk" territory in general.

Nah, I think a t-shirt would be better. Perhaps both?

Don't correct them. Just nod and move on. It's as simple as that. You'll be a much happier person.

Why would you want to correct anyone, who assumes it’s SS? The only reason would be to impress them. As someone else mentioned, then get a yellow gold Sub. I choose watches that impress me. I don’t care what anyone else thinks., and truth be told, no one ever notices my watch, except my close friends, and family, who know I’m a collector.

Hi Kat, good question. I guess it's because the watch enthusiast in me would want my piece to be correctly identified and discussed (in the right setting anyway). After experimenting for years I arrived at the best piece for me. It's not about wanting to show off $ to impress. I'm aware of other options (like YG) that do that better. I didn't pick them. Still wouldn't.

The only people who give a flying eff, about the details of the watch you are wearing, are right here! It’s why we all joined. We can share all the details of each new acquisition, with people who get us, and our passion for nice mechanical timepieces. It sounds like your own obsession, and it IS an obsession, is bordering on unhealthy. Who cares what strangers think?! We know it’s white gold, and are suitably impressed.

Thanks again for your thoughts Kat, much appreciated. I agree that this is the best place to get into the weeds on the watches, though right now I'm not having the most fun being psychoanalyzed

I'm not sure I totally agree though that people outside of here do not care. Actually the experience turned into a fun conversation.

The guy told me he was after a SS sub but having a hard time getting one. I then offered to try to help him out with my AD if I can get a line on one. We exchanged numbers.
