Opportunity from local AD

Hello,
Got a call yesterday from an SA that I know well at a local AD that I have a modest history with both jewelry for wife, including engagement/wedding set, a 214270, 116710LN, TT DJ I bought for my Dad and a Tag. "Offer" was for a 126711 CHNR that is allocated for expected delivery Dec 2023, pay deposit (50%, which is not an insignificant sum, though I can afford it), balance at delivery.

What I was really wanting was a VTNR, BLNR or BLRO on jubilee or 116500 white dial. Not sure if I should just go for the CHNR anyways and see what happens later. She made it clear that making this purchase doesn't push me down the list for any of the other watches - I didn't ask if the reverse was true regarding not buying.

Anyways, I'm a little conflicted, but I have been wanting to add another Rolex piece (haven't added one since 20190, and this seems like a good bird in hand opportunity.

Thoughts on the 50% deposit? I've known this AD for 35 years and live literally right down the street, so probability of getting screwed should be zero, but like I say, that's a fair chunk of money just sitting out there doing nothing.

Do you want the piece? Is it on your list? If not then I’d pass and let it go to someone who really wants it.

Maybe you could ask if you could instead put 50% down on SS GMTs. At least that way, its somewhat guaranteed you’d get one in near future.

Nice. However, you yourself stated it’s not the piece you really wanted. I’d wait and hold out for what you really want. These pieces are shaking loose now it seems. Regarding paying half, I’ve not heard of a Rolex AD requiring that. I know Omega Boutiques do for their exclusive issues. But I personally don’t like to play that game. However, ask if it’s refundable? If it is and you can afford it then I guess I’d play along provided it’s the watch you want. Cheers.

Why is a Rolex AD asking for a 50% deposit on an easily sellable watch that's already allotted to them?

Strange...

You've bought multiple watches from them, they don't need your money until they can deliver the watch. Back on point, the CHNR is amazing, but I'd hold out for what you really want first.

IMO, only if the CHNR is something you really want. FWIW, I don't think it's a reference in such demand that you have to place a 50% deposit and wait 4 months to receive it.

You'd be surprised, there's a pretty high demand for the Root Beer. Obviously its all about personal preference. Being that i think the RB is one of the most beautiful pieces Rolex makes, I'd do this deal at MSRP in a heartbeat.

Buy it only if you really like it. I was also waiting for the BLNR but then the opportunity came to pick CHNR and it was immediate yes from me first time I saw it. Beautiful watch which I rarely take off now. But I am still on the list for the Batgirl because they are two completely different watches in terms of feel and style.

Question would be, do you think you have a realistic shot at those other watches at this present time? If no then pull the trigger on the Rootbeer, wear and enjoy and see what happens further down the line.

BLRO has now been bumped to steel Daytona difficulty according to my AD (I already have one so they have no reason to BS me). So that and 116500 are tough asks.

Once I saw it in person, I was blown away. If you look at my list, you'll see I haven't popped up to PM yet, and I guess spending 17K (out the door with taxes) will be new territory for me, not that I can't afford it, just that I'm a little "frugal" lol.

Easy: It’s not what you want so don’t buy it, period…
Would you settle for something else when looking for a specific car you want to buy?

I would not put a deposit down. Just think it’s wrong of any AD to request it. We are all different though :)

Will the AD be paying 5% interest on your deposit?

If not, why would you give the AD a free loan?

Rolex isn't asking the AD for a deposit.

I’m in Baton Rouge. I’ve bought from Lee Michaels in the past and never pictured them asking for a deposit. I don’t think they are an AD in Shreveport anymore.

Unless it's a hard to sell special-order watch just for you, I would not put down a deposit. When it arrives, they can easily sell it if you don't take it. No need to tie up your money.

just find it inappropriate for any authorized dealer to ask for one. However, everyone has their own perspective.

I really like this watch but if it isn't your 1st or even your 2nd pick, then pass. I find it odd they are asking for a deposit, especially on a watch you didn't even ask for.

Only if the RB was on your radar to begin with. If you really don’t want it then no.

CHNR is a great watch. The December allocation is interesting. Unless something has changed dealers used to find out a week out west they were being sent. Seems like they are taking a 50% deposit and will sit on it “knowing” they will get one by years end. Seems a bit fishy.

Since it’s not on your short list, I’d pass.

I think CHNR looks a lot better than BLNR/BLRO/VTNR but if that it isn't your first choice, pass it.

Opportunity from local AD

Personally, I like the Root Beer better than the watches on your list. The deposit request is used when ordering a specific watch from Rolex. It is
called “an intent to purchase” request. Nothing fishy here. If the AD cannot get the approval from Rolex, for the request, you get your deposit back. Sounds like they know they can get this watch. This watch is stunning IRL. If you like it, and it won’t hurt financially, get it! If not, say “No, thank you. I’ll wait for you to get one of the watches on my list. They should not hold it against you, because you never asked for it. I guarantee they have others who did ask for it. But, your choice.

Agree totally. TT Root Beer is a great piece, but be careful if you feel like you are only settling for it. As far as deposits go, I've done several like that with my AD with no problems.

If it's a watch you have on your list OP, I would do it myself. Mostly because I think it's a much more interesting GMT than the others in stainless steel. But you do you
