Pet Peeve!

I love reading the various threads on the forum but I have to say the one thing that kills a thread for me is when it is hiyjacked and I have to endure a bunch of innane drivel!

I get into a really interesting, informative thread and then it goes off on tangents that completly obliterate the topic.

I can understand it happening to diffuse a bad thread, one that is throwing personal insults but when it is an informative or techincal thread it really bugs me that I have to skim a bunch of nonsense to get back to the meat of the subject.

I do not see it as much on other forums as I do on this one, when I do see it it usually get's handled in short order by the mods but the mods here seem to get right in with it most times!

A lot of what is written in the hiyjack would be best written in pm's as to the rest of us it is of no relevance or importance.

There, rant over

I'd better keep my thoughts on this to myself as I don't need any more points.

Lighten up a little and have fun.

Which, my friends, gives these Forums the fun, light-hearted flavour that we all know and love.

Many threads run their course.

I've started serious threads which died in the first couple of posts only to be bought back to life by hijacks.

Many consider the friendliness of TRF to be one of it's greatest assets. How would friendships develop without people chopping and changing subject and posting silly rubbish? PM...if somebody pm'd me out of the blue concerning off the wall humour of some of the stuff discussed in hijacks I'd be polite but kinda confused.

You may not have noticed that on the main discussion board, hijack's rarely occur. Members and mods who are known to hijack respect the forum and do not want to start changing the course of threads that are technical or people searching for advice.

It only takes a flick of the finger to roll past the inane posts that get injected in most of the threads here in the General Boards..

There are many who want to be a part of the flavor of TRF but have no knowledge about the particular subject... and others who are attempting to hijack the thread intentionally.... just roll right past..... it doesn't hurt; you don't have to read the nonsense..

We believe, and see, that forums where heavy handed moderation requires that threads remain "on-topic", and other policing actions are frequent, give a forum a different "personality", and their member activity is also reflected in that personality..

Thanks for your thoughts larry, I just find that that flick of the finger to go past the posts stops dead the flow of the subject. Then again that is what is about being part of a diverse community I guess and If I am in the minority then it is my own issue to deal with and not anyone elses which is fair enough, just was wondering if anyone else out there in the community was feeling the same way.

On the whole I do enjoy the way this forum is moderated, thanks for your hard work

See, I am not having a go at the friendliness, I love that about this forum but when a hiyjack takes place we end up with three pages of stuff that if it were a vocal conversation would be funny but when it is in written format it is just stale. It is like talking for an hour on the phone with a friend or reading for an hour the same conversation via email.

I guess the answer so as not to upset is for me just not to read threads with certain commentators, that way I do not have to plow through stuff that has no relevance to the original topic, shame as those folks do contribute valuable information as well!

I guess there is a fine line to be trod with this. BTW this is not a personal attack to just a thought that comes up often for me and I wondered if anyone else felt the same, if so then changes can be made, if not then I just forget about it and do what I mentioned above.
Thanks for the thougfull comment.

Kia ora Shandy,

If you don't want to have to wade through posts by people you think are hijacking threads with nonsense, simply go into your User CP and add their names to your ignore list and you'll never have to read their posts again (unless you choose to that is).

Anyway, I understand where you're coming from.

Are you accusing MODs to hijack? I'm a MOD but to my knowledge I have never hijacked a thread! And I never will (I'll burn in hell for this remark ).

If you can make it a couple of real burgers (Boston beer burgers for example) and a couple of ice-cold one's, I'm your man I'll bring a bottle of Dutch Gin, it'll put hair on your chest

I would doubt changes would be made as the forum has been here before members like you or I joining and will be here after. With so many of the mods involved in "a good hijack" you might find it hard to start shifting snads but that is just my sole opinion.

When I mentioned the friendliness, I meant that it is often silly things like hijacks when these friendships are forged. I personally have never made a friend here because they know a lot about watches but I have made friends with people say Frans because he has posted in his hijacking posts a love of gin or something similar which is a common interest to me.

I might be in the minority here but Joe's, Martin, Leo's, Ed's and Allan's posts in the potentially very serious thread yesterday had me in stitches. Some may find them funny, some not so.

I personally tire of the JJ/sheep/rado/nato posts as it get's hard to get excited about stuff you've heard over and over however many find it funny and all new members probably think they are the first to post the stuff.

Is that a bad thing? Of course not. It might get a little boring and silly but in those cases perhaps it is time for a break.

Larry has a point. I don't think I see Larry post so much in the OD boards nowadays but I would imagine he doesn't see the usual suspects post so much in the Rolex discussion or technical boards.

This forum is a big place with a huge membership. Maybe everybody doesn't agree or perhaps wants different things but there will always be room for everybody.

Well said Jim, diversity is the life blood of open discussion, this is just what I was hoping for when I posted this thread, I much appreciate your thoughts.

In my business i have some spare time and i spend a good bit of time on several forums, IMO this one is one of the friendliest and i am still a new guy. There are a few times that it has gotten a little silly but hell that is part of the enjoyment to me. chill and enjoy........

I have been on forums where they are so heavily moderated, that if one post in a thread is OT, it's deleted, to me, that is not fun. The mod's here allow quite a bit of leeway with that, and in some cases it's fun and at times puts a smile on my face. FWIW, I believe that it also allows many of us to see what kind of person is behind the keyboard and makes TRF much more personable.

The OT interjections make TRF what it is....EXCELLENT!

I do understand what you mean, though, shandy.

I' myself, am simply disgusted at the fact that Vick is allowed back in the NFL.... I know he 'says' he regrets what happened, but what he did was simply despicable, IMO. Wait - is this the right thread? Am I lost?

Kiddn, Shandy. I know what you mean, but I think some of the HJ's (Jimbo, Bubba - heads out of the gutter, plz) are hysterical. Some - not so much, but as our Homie from the Desert said - it just takes a flick of a finger to skip through the nonsense!

Truthfully, in many instances, the hijacks make TRF the funny, friendly place that it is. I wouldn't change a thing!
