Icon17 C1 Moonphase: "My God, it's full of stars"

This is a watch that needs to be seen in real life, so I took some decent pics today with my dSLR and macro lens. These were taken in direct sunlight.

The watch has a stunning aventurine dial AND a matching aventurine lunar disc. It also a highly lumed slightly 3D 4 colour ceramic moon.

Lovely big dial and no logo. With GS style sharp steel black polished 3 hands.

It’s exactly what I hoped for and I bought it instantly as soon as I handled it at the excellent launch event at the London Planetarium.

It’s a better aventurine (deeper and more sparkly) than the Lange Saxonia Thin. And with the moon disc in aventurine, a better dial than the Moser moonphase. 🤯

Consort bracelet suits it perfectly, as does the Mastrotto leather blue deployant strap.

CW knocked it out of the park with this watch 👏🏽

P.S. for anyone too young to have seen 2001 A Space Odyssey, that's where the headline quote comes from 🙂

Unfortunately not

I considered whether this watch could be bespoked, and concluded that the only improvement I could make was to delete the "Swiss Made" text. And that's a very tiny thing.

Otherwise it's already perfect

Thank you for the pictures and the video! This watch looks great, it's a perfect successor to the previous moonphase, except:

Honestly, this is the first time I really hate and don't understand the "Swiss Made" text on the dial. They finally removed all CW logos, so why they're putting this meaningless text on the display? For me it just spoils the overall effect...

I agree it should not be there, but it's not a deal-breaker IMO. You do forget it's there.

It was a poor decision. Perhaps they thought it would sell more watches.

Wow strong words!

Do you think this dial would look better on leather strap

Yes, I think it does look better on leather. But the bracelet suits it too.

I got both, as it's nice to change the look - especially as CW watches have quick release straps/bracelets.

CW up to their old tricks it seems. Using other brand designs to pawn off as their own (in this case, Le Rhone Hedonia moon). Not sure I could think any less of them at this point.

Well yes, you are right: this Le Rhone is the one using other brands designs to pawn off as their own (in this case, CW C9 Moonphase and Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow). So now I am sure, I would not take in concideartion to purchase any outrageoulsy overpriced Le Rhone watch.

They don’t look alike. No adventurine and CW added some tacky Roman numerals, which makes it unattractive. In any case, this isn’t a plug for Le Rhone as much as it’s a call out of CW.

For your reference again: THIS dial layout WAS designed by CW, and a lot earlier. What that thief company did was only to add some points onto the dial and added a different case and a huge price tag.

But to be honest, whatever you like or dislike the watches, it is not a question that this dial layout was stolen from CW and not in contrary.

Well the case and hands are different. It’s not a total replica… but the dial architecture and design is eerily similar, no?

Case shape. Plots and markings. Colour. Bracelet integration.

Honestly, apart from something vaguely resembling stars and a moon I just don't see it. We can all have opinions though so if the CW reminds you of it I can't dispute that. Just doesn't for me

The implementation of the moonphase is also similar to the one used by Arnold & Son on their Perpetual Moon. Theyve been using this style of moonphase for the last decade or so. I see the CW as just another watch using a similar style of moon phase methodology. However, the price point is great.

Correction..The A&S Perpetual Moon debuted at BaselWorld 2013. The CW moonglow came out in 2019. Am I missing an earlier release by CW? - I see now that a 2016 reference was mentioned by CW. Still, it would be difficult to claim that Christopher Ward designed this Moonphase layout.

Well, based on this, now I think, that could be the original design of the CW version, but now I'm starting to wonder who might have been the first to use this dial layout?

C1 Moonphase: "My God, it's full of stars"

This thread got me to buy one. The dial is pretty spectacular. The aventurine is very nice. The dial proper and the moon disk blend together giving the illusion of one continuous aventurine piece. The “Swiss Made” text is definitely a distraction, but at the price point I just don’t care. The dial is very prominent and takes center stage over the case. The dial itself is 38mm. For a 40.5 mm watch, that is VERY prominent. Good lord I like the superluminova on the moon. There ARE nicer moons out there, but not at this price point.

The case is a bit basic. It’s all brushed, with a small bevel along the lugs. There is a polish on one surface on the bezel as well. The case and bracelet are so dull in appearance I thought they were titanium until I checked the site again which confirmed them to be SS.

In pictures I liked this on the strap better. IRL, I like it on the bracelet. The strap has a deployant which is VERY chunky. I generally do not like deployants. This one is not changing my mind. The strap is a bit bulky too. Thick padding and doesn’t really taper. Perhaps I will have a strap made with a taper to 18mm and use a basic buckle. For now I like the bracelet.

You can see it next to my Czapek QDB which is also an Aventurine dial. The Czapek Aventurine is darker, almost black in comparison. The CW is bluer.

The bracelet is a dead ringer for the Tudor jubilee bracelet from the 80s-00s. You can see it next to my Tudor chrono. The center link on the Tudor was originally brushed, but came back from a service polished…oh well.

Accuracy was quite good. Averaging around +3/day with 290 amplitude as measured in my timegrapher.

For the price, this is a steal. I have a bel Canto on order. This makes me all the more excited for that watch. Hell of a bargain. Really pleased. This is just fun. Not everything has to cost a lot to be enjoyable.

Glad you like it

Consider the Twelve Ti Blue too. I got that a couple of weeks ago and think it's incredible.

Why the hate on Christopher Ward logo or name on dials? Because the name doesnt sound French or Swiss enough?

I bet it it was Cristoph Wardello everyone would love it haha
