Made a last-minute decision: Sub date instead of no-date

About a month or so ago, I decided to stop looking at Submariner homages and finally buy the real thing. My first choice: a Sub no-date 14060 with a tritium dial from the 1990s.

Along the way though, I was plagued by indecision—I could save a little $ by getting an Explorer 1. Or, spend a little more and get the date, which I use frequently.

I decided that a 16610 from the 1990s would be the best compromise—I’d have the date, but I’d still have the classic tritium dial and the 93150 bracelet.

I saw a good deal come up and grabbed it:

I took it to an AD with a certified Rolex technician who confirmed the watch and movement are authentic. It looks incredible, with the amount of wear you’d expect from a 1990 E-series.

There’s a little bit of wear on a couple of bracelet links and the bracelet clasp has been worn down in one corner, leaving a tiny gap:

Obviously the previous owner was a secret agent, ha ha!

Came with boxes, tag with serial number, no papers, but it did include a really neat piece of history: the original sales receipt. It was purchased on 6/26/91 for $2,500 (plus tax) at Corrigan’s, North East Mall, Hurst, Texas. I paid a few hundred dollars more than that!

So this should be a happy ending, but I have to admit—I wish I had gone with the no-date. It’s the watch I wanted forever, but I decided to be practical. I’ve seen so many people say that they bought the no-date only to regret not having the date. Well, it turns out, the opposite can happen too! I’m going to give it a little time, but don’t be surprised if you see this go up on the sales forum. My wife and I are going away for the weekend, so I'll have some time to think it over.

Here’s another shot: my dog waiting for me to put my camera down:

Congrats! Nothing practically wrong with being practical! You can always get a sub no date at a later date.

I totally agree and have done the same thing. IMO, you only know for sure once you have 'tested' the watch out on your wrist

Absolutely correct. I've lived it too and I'm in the struggling process once again. I've made critical life changing decisions that were easier than choosing a damn Rolex watch. It makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

I hope it grows on you, but don't suffer...........get what you long for like Karis (kcmo) says. She is so right. Now if I could just figure out what my heart says this time.

It's great hearing that you and others have gone through this too. I feel the same way. If I was indecisive like this at my job, I wouldn't last a day.

Yeah, it's nice to know there are others with this sickness. I have never suffered the mental ping pong as I have with this situation. I'll go against the grain (or some of it), and tell you to get that no date. Get it smackin' new and be proud to have a different Sub than so many others. There is something about it's balance that is just profound. It is also the last of a breed and that is special too. Keep us posted and enjoy your weekend.

Nice Submariner.

And now you have the same Rolex as the rest of the world.

Hope your decision turns out to be right. If not, you can always by the Sub [no date] and have both.
Congrats,

I walked in your shoes...And I am now a proud owner of a Mint Y Serial Sub Date. I paid a fair price / to an incredibly well-thought-of seller: LawrenceB... and could not be happier.

Time will tell if I jones for a No Date...but right now I am looking at a classic on my wrist. I have looked at and for the date numerous times since I strapped it on, so I *think* i have made the right decision!

Hope you enjoy your Sub to the fullest.

Nice job--I'm happy you chose correctly! Maybe it's because I'm off today, but for once, the date just doesn't seem critical. I'll see how I am at work next week.

How's that for resale value!

Keep the sub on your wrist for a couple of months before deciding on flipping for a NoDate. What's worse than buyer's remorse is seller's regret!

Great choice. Congrats!
Since you do use the date feature the Date Sub is the better choice for you.

Your watch looks great. At least you're just debating on the Date vs. No Date. I'm all over the place with your two options, plus both Explorer IIs (white vs. black dial), or the GMTc.

Seriously, that's a darn good looking watch you chose.

Okay, I'm giving it a shot! It's fun to be wearing a Rolex in Atlantic City around the casinos. I have to admit, I love how the cyclops makes it so obvious that there's a Rolex on my wrist. And it really does look great, if I say so myself. If I do end up flipping it, I'm still glad I made this initial investment in a great watch.
