How many is enough
I dont want another watch … I think.
With 6 Rolex’s in the box and another 6 of other makes, I think I have enough. But, you know what thought did………. Rotating wear patterns I get through them all in a couple of weeks, mostly a day at a time. When have you decided your collection has reached it limit?

I'm not a greedy person, I've somewhat stalled at 3. An air-king from 2015, a Submariner 114060 from 2020, and a Daytona 116500 from 2022.
I do juggle the idea of adding a Datejust on Jubilee + fluted bezel in 36mm because I don't have anything on jubilee or with a date function. But it's really become an afterthought because I'm so content with my current Rolex pickings. |

It's well documented on these pages and scientifically proven that the right answer is: x+1=y, where
x = the number of watches you have and y = the number of watches you should have. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk |

I have 3 luxury watches (by my wallets standards). It’s those 5 lesser ones that open the revolving door for my eBay sales. I’ll settle on 3 someday; keeping 2 nicer ones and a g-shock or Seiko diver.

Never enough. There always seems to be another 1 or more sitting at the back of my brain waiting for the call. It's a sickness but, fortunately, funds (and wife) allow.

After years of collecting and having many watches, I have arrived at the following conclusions:
- Only buy and keep the watches that, after you see/try, become a must have. - A rotation of watches, assures that each of them will have wrist time. - Since this hobby is a sickness that never ends, if the urge strikes again for a new purchase; 1 of the existing ones in the collection, must find a new home. After reaching my collectors maturity stage (if such a thing exists ); my watch box members stay at 7 pieces. Disclaimer: Can not blame any other enthusiast, for been completely irrational while being a part of this Addiction. |

Usually when you get to this crossroads you consolidate for something big or PM, assuming these aren't PM watches already.

None are PM. (Except 1 x TT) I see little benefit in spending sooooo much extra for a fancy case. For me, it’s what inside and the dial that counts.

I think the exact opposite. The feel of a gold or platinum on your wrist is a huge part of the experience for me. The weight feels luxurious

I have enough, even a few I should move along, but I continually see watches that interest me and a few that I really want. The art of collecting watches I think is to have a group that you enjoy wearing rather than a group you like looking at. This definition at least slows down my acquisition rate. There is no magic number but the more watches you own the fewer opportunities you have to wear a given watch.

I went through this process a while ago and landed on these three.
Too many watches hurts my head and three seemed just the right number for me. I guess a have a fourth (Seiko SKX) but I’m talking about “nice”watches I guess. I think it really varies person to person and what your collection goals are. For me, I wanted three modern interpretations of classic references. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No easy answer to this. I have had several "nice" watches. Several Rolex models, a couple of Tudors, and some other brands along the way.
Thinking about practicality (lol) 3-4 sounds about right for me. The problem is I LIKE lots of the models out there. But the reality is, in my profession and level of formal dress, I have no real need for a gold Day Date. Gorgeous, YES, but for once or twice a year, not something I can easily justify. Same with lots of models. Do I NEED 3 different GMT models/colors/ etc... No. You get the point. One of my watches ("Coke" GMT II) was a graduation gift from my father. I'll never sell. I have a couple of new reference Subs, and my most recent is Tudor Panda Chrono. I originally didn't think I'd be a chrono guy. Too hard to read the time quickly like my Subs. But, what I discovered is, I really use my phone as often as my watch for telling actual time. So, at the end of the day, it's jewelry for me. So I really like the Tudor but it's a bit thick compared to the Daytona. So, for now I have my name on a wish list with my SA. He's great and even though it may be a while I don't NEED it. So I can wait. Maybe a surprise call will happen sooner rather than later. Is that it? Who knows. I am passing this tradition on with my kids. I have a request for an OP for two of the boys for college graduation gifts. If they choose to add more later in life, that's up to them. Hopefully they keep the gift as the one that's special to them. |

I’ve found that “less” actually is more. At one time I had 9 watches… 3-4 is the sweet spot it seems. Otherwise you just wake up in the morning and wonder “what the hell am I going to wear today…”
Also, I find that with > 4 watches and I don’t really get to bond with any one of them.

I JUST hit 8 by buying 2 Rolexes (plus 4 Omegas, 1 Longines, and 1 Farer), and I am definitely having the feeling that I have too many, despite 1 being 'away'.
I adore all of them, but definitely find myself feeling bad that I don't get to wear some of them often enough (I swap every day or so). I somewhat find myself wanting to reduce down to 7, and have a 'watch per day' sort of arrangement. |

I would not say my collection has a limit but I will say I am at a point where I want to get rid of several watches worth 5-15K each for a piece that costs about 70K
These are watches I have never warmed up to after buying or have tired of and never wear anymore and have no attachments to. Collection size is up to the individual

How many is enough
I think 4 watches, each getting worn about 25% of the time is optimum for me. But I’m up to 5 and I’m not selling anything, so that’s where I’m at now. I’m not ruling out a 6th either, but that’s probably where I draw the line.
