New reference black Daytona - shall I?

Obviously they are hugely inflated at the moment but been offered the chance to get the new black reference at £23k which is about 29k USD.

Fairly similar to the grey prices for the old references.

Obviously we don’t have crystal balls but what do you guys think? I just don’t see it dropping that much despite the current economic climate so I am swaying toward going ahead…

The asking price for the new black reference is now 30k usd on FB. When it was first released it was 31k.

Personally I think it will keep going down, but who knows?

I would go for it if you are comfortable with it dropping a bit more on the secondary market.

I'd say it depends on what your goal is. If you are primarily aiming for the Daytona as your grail watch, it might make sense to go grey, bite the bullet, and pay the premium. I've been considering the secondary market for years but decided in 2022 to pursue the AD route, aiming to make the SS Daytona the centerpiece of my collection when I manage to acquire it. This approach has been quite rewarding so far. I enjoy my regular visits to the AD near my workplace, where I can discuss watches over a coffee during breaks.

Despite my love for Rolex and the appreciation I have for every watch I've bought, I can't justify spending over £20k on a Daytona. It's true that a watch is ultimately worth what a buyer is willing to pay, but I'm cautious about contributing to inflated secondary market prices and supporting flippers. In my opinion, they often spoil the hobby for genuine enthusiasts who wish to enjoy wearing and keeping their Daytona or any other sought-after model.

From a market trends perspective, we've seen fluctuating prices, but historical data suggests that high-demand models like the Daytona often maintain their value. I believe in buying a watch for the joy it brings rather than purely as an investment.

How will you feel if the market shifts? Are you buying this watch primarily as an investment or for personal enjoyment?

If you want the watch because you genuinely love it, want to wear and enjoy it, and can afford it, then why not?

If you "want" it for any other reason (i.e. "investment" or speculation), then buying over RRP is always going to be a gamble.

Depends on what you are buying it for are you going to wear and enjoy wearing it then buy, or buying for pure speculation on prices going up, leave it for someone else to buy and wear and enjoy..

OP, that is a tough call. I am a Daytona fan and have a number in my collection. I have not done it thru the grey route, as I can’t justify the extra $$$. For thar price you can find excellent pre owned PM Daytona options which is what I have done. Who knows about pricing. Can you see that watch on your wrist for years to come? If so, maybe it’s a yes. I am hoping to get one from my Boutique freinds.

I would not. At retail or close, maybe. Not the flex watch it was a few years ago and so many other more interesting watches for the money.

Waiting for an AD to let you buy one is for most of us impossible. So yes, buy it now and start enjoying it. The new one is beautiful

If you look at it as a long play I feel it’s a relatively safe bet. I mean if we’re looking at it from a monetary value situation. From an enjoyment perspective, if it’s the one you want then it’ll only increase in sentimental value.

if you are being offered one for GBP 23k, that is a good price for the new reference I think. Most a re listed around GBP 28k. If you like it, would make sense to get it (and given you dont have a strong realtionshio with your AD).

There is no way the Daytona will go below 1.5 times retail price ,

The local Grey dealer by me has 2022 black dial Daytona for £21k , £23 k for a new reference seems fair.

Hey guys thanks for the advice and lack of judgment! I would be buying for enjoyment with no plans to sell. I have a little boy with another on the way, so the majority of my watch collection would be going to them :D

I am going to sit tight for a while. I haven't tried with my AD to be honest as I am sure he will tell me there would be a considerable wait time with no guarantee. I probably should though- I've bought a lot from him in the past two years and he's done me well. Got the following from him:

- RG Yachtmaster OF
- Polar White Explorer
- Black Sub Date
- Daytona with Champagne dial and black markers (the Pikachu as some people allude to it) on OF
- Ladies DJ with Mint Green Dial (Jubilee/Fluted)

I am currently on the waitlist for the Sprite, White Gold OF Daytona known as the Ghost and Le Mans looking OF.

I just went grey for a 126500 and couldn’t be happier. I’ve always been a fan of the 116500 and have been on the list with my AD for a couple years but felt like I needed to jump on a 126. Love it!

I like the new reference significantly better than the previous, but it's still simply not a $30,000 watch in my mind.
