Opinion ROLEX PATEK
Hello everyone.
What do you think of this dilemma? ROLEX YACHTMASTER 42 WHITE GOLD 226659 versus PATEK PHILIPPE AQUANAUT 5167A-001 STEEL I know one is white gold and the other is steel. I have the opportunity to have a PATEK but I don't know if the money spent is worth as much for simple steel. The ROLEX is gold, so in my opinion it's more prestigious and you can adjust the size, whereas on the PATEK you have to cut the strap. I'd also like your opinion. Sorry I can't put any pictures, I'll try later. |

The Aquanaut was my first Patek so I’m somewhat biased. There are other attributes to consider besides material

Very, very different timepieces. So it's really a personal preference.

I previously owned a 5167 and just didn't do it for me. But it's about what you like.

Personally, I love Patek's complicated watches and don't aspire to an Aquanaut. A quick search online (here in the UK) produces a 2019 Aquanaut for nearly double the cost of a new Yachtmaster 42 in white gold. But it's your watch/money/choice... |

Not a fan of most all the Patek range great movement's but just don't like there style not a huge fan of the YM either. They are very different watches so will leave the choice to yourself you are the only one that matters in choice of watches..

Exactly what he said. Not a fan of either. If I had to choose, I do prefer the aesthetic of any Rolex over any Patek. I just don’t find anything about that Patek, or any other, visually interesting. Kat Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Personal preference. I'd stick with the YM on this one.

2 very comparable watches, both in looks and roughly the price. The Rolex is about $5K usd more, but that is maybe because it IS white gold? Patek is steel, but of course has the brand name "tax" so to speak. You mentioned that the Rolex is more prestigious because of the PM, but the name Patek also gains some points on the prestige scale?
Both have rubber straps and both have date complications. Honestly it comes down to which one you like the look of more. As for the straps, I think that would be a non issue? True, you need to cut the straps on the Patek, but the Rolex OF has special length ones that they give you when you take delivery of the piece. In both cases, it's a "one and done" sizing so to speak. If your wrist size changes, new straps are the only option. The Rolex has a Glidelock, so at least there's some sort of limited built in adjustment. I'm not sure if the Patek has a microadjustment feature at all? There is no right or wrong answer here. If you haven't had the opportunity to try on both, I would do that and see what you think. For me personally, neither one of those "sing" to me. Both are great watches though! Best of luck on whichever you decide. |

5167 doesn’t really do it for me. I’d take a 5164 any day though.
YM doesn’t really do it for me either. I’d rather have a gold daytona on rubber at that price point. |

I would say a PM Rolex on OF is a lot of value for a watch, comparing to the 5167…

Maybe out of topic but I would rather pick a rose or white gold Aquanaut, best of both worlds imho

I think the patek is ugly. If it weren't for the brand name I would dismiss it instantly.

Well today many wear the brand and not the watch this includes Rolex.

The Aquanaut truly one of the most overhyped watches out there. Note that I LOVE the Nautilus and would wear it every day for the rest of my life I just think its little brother is entirely forgettable.

I'd lean towards Patek in this instance. I think it's slightly more elegant and nicer design.
Here in the UK, compared to the YM the Patek is also over 30% lower cost at MSRP, but almost twice as expensive on the secondary market. Assuming you're buying from an AD, it will be easy to swap out for the YM if you decide you don't like it. |

At retail - Patek
At grey - Rolex I have the 40mm Rose YM and love it and I’ve been wanting a PP, but unwilling to pay grey prices.

Cannot speak to the YM, but there is not much to the 5167. As stated, but for the Patek name on the dial, who knows how popular it would be. Patek's strength to me is in their complications and rare arts.

I’ve had the WG YM 42 for about a year now and can say with conviction it’s spectacular! I’ve not handled that Patek but much of the detail and differentiation comes with the fit and finish of the bracelets. Being these are both on rubber straps I would lean toward the YM

Rolex usually make good-looking watches. I have yet to see a good-looking Patek.
