Topic: Has the Superhero genre played out?
After a poor box office year in 2023, one has to wonder if Tony Stark's funeral was symbolic of something more. Is it just a lull or have we reached the end? Your thoughts . . . . .

I hope it has played out. The only superhero movies I enjoyed are from the Batman franchise. The endless Spiderman movies, Marvel with the rings & the tree guy and the raccoon, the gillion sub-stories & plot lines all rendered in CGI... pass. I know I sound very old & cranky. I'm not that old. I may be that cranky.
We did watch Killers of the Flower Moon after reading the book. It's an amazing (albeit awful & sad) story portrayed very well on film.

I’ll admit that I don’t understand the appeal of superhero movies (to adults). I get the appeal / interest from kids, but the whole thing seems a touch cheesy to me.
I understand I’m in the minority with this opinion. Same as my thoughts on Disney (I don’t get the obsession many adults have). I do have an appreciation for the creators’ ability to print money with these movies. Even if they’re played out, they’ve made a killing and I’m sure the future value is huge with the merch. I’ll crawl back into my cave LOL. |

The Marvels was a huge flop.
They targeted girls and young women but girls and young women generally don’t like superhero films. Boys and young men like super hero films, but they’re not going to want to see that movie. I don’t know what Disney was thinking. It seems like they don’t know who their customer is. As much as they want to move forward with all the gender swapping nonsense, fact is, boys are still boys and girls are still girls. Also, I think if they made good movies, people would actually go see them. And don’t even get me started with all the CGI. It’s way overdone. It’s like watching cartoons now. I think the MCU have passed its glory days. Hell, I can’t even keep up the number of marvel shows and films that Disney churn out per month!
The only superhero thing I can really deal with these days is The Boys… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I hope they’ve passed.
They were good once upon a time when they were taken more seriously. It really feels like since Disney bought out the MCU stuff it’s gone to crap. It’s all just a money making algorithm now. There’s no rules or consistency. All the do is just cite broadly “the multiverse” and expect it all to just work. I really feel like all of them since Disney bought it have been utter s**t.

I hope it’s over. 2-3 hours of CGI battling is so mind numbing and repetitive.

Lately though, the movies have been more about the trippy backgrounds and the battle sequences. All sizzle and no steak. Hard for me to see them turning it around.

I find those movies to be unwatchable, unbearable. But, hey it takes all kinds.

The only superhero movies I've seen are the Batman trilogy from Nolan. Those were alright, but the rest I won't even try.

It’s entertainment. When you make enough, there will be duds. Most are better than the last Bond films since Casino Royale….. Anyway, I liked Guardians of the Galaxy and the Deadpool films especially.

The difference is between bond and MCU is that MGM doesn’t churn a movie out every 2 months, therefore when they do release it feels like we are getting a movie worth waiting for. Also the storyline (for the most part) is actually interesting. Skyfall will always be my favourite. The last MCU thing I bothered watching was WonderVision Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Disney started going down hill when they started to go woke with their movies.

It will be over soon if they keep losing hundreds of millions per film. It’s not a sustainable business model. These movies cost $300 million to produce, so they need to gross at least $600 million to break even. The theaters get a 50% cut for every movie, so when you see gross sales, you need to account for that. Disney lost close to a billion dollars on their last ten films. Went to see Aquaman 2 last week because my boys asked me to take them. It was a Friday night over a holiday and it was opening day for the movie. I was worried about getting there on time and if we would be able to get good seats.
Arrived at the theater and the place was absolutely dead. We were the only ones in the 8 pm showing. The movie was terrible and I would have fallen asleep if it hadn’t been so loud. I hope the super hero thing is over. There are better stories to be told. |

The 80's IMO was the best decade for comedies, action movies and thrillers. They don't make em like that anymore. I have little interest in what is being made today.

The last great movie with the perfect blend of traditional special effects and CGI was the Matrix (the original one). It all went down the drain after that.

Do the Deadpool movies count? Loved those. The others are mostly trash.

The Deadpool movies and the first Captain America movie were the only ones that I’ve enjoyed. Only went to see one Avenger movie in the theater and have only watched parts of the rest. |

I’m not sure that the superhero line has played out, but I am certain modern movie making/scripting has totally exhausted itself.
