Grail alert, a new to me 94110
Thanks to anyone who responded to my last couple of threads asking for thoughts on prospective watches. Sharing your knowledge is incredibly helpful, kind and humbling. Anytime I come here I realize I don't know much. After not finding what I was looking for online, I ended up finding a local 94110, which in itself is a miracle. This one is from the original owner and has a 1980 serial. It's on a 9315 folded link and came as-is. I see some mid-case rust which I'll have my watchmaker deal with. I surrendered my '89 79090 plus some cash ($2750, full disclosure) for this in return. I think I did alright. It's amazing how the blue hues change in certain light. Sometimes the dial appears dark, sometimes light.
In terms of replacing the original tophat, what do you recommend? I'm a cyclops guy, but I am TrueDome curious. |

Nice find. I always prefer a cyclops when there is a date unless of course if it’s a sea dweller. Congrats.

The rust would be a slight concern hopefully it’s just superficial damage but I’m sure can be made good. They are great looking watches and it would seem getting a bit harder to find

Nice pickup, and welcome to the club. Looks like a simply honest lifelong worn example.
You are going to want to have someone, a watchmaker, remove the crystal the crystal retaining ring and remove all that DNA under the under the retaining ring. That is corrosive and that is pitting the case. The crystal may or may not be salvageable anyway.

I was curious about the rust too, I hope it looks better after the watchmaker handles it.
I hope you post the after pictures |

I just got this back from service. The rust on the mid case cleaned up well and we were able to use the original crown and tube and pass 10BAR. What a difference the new crystal made. This is an incredible watch and I’m so lucky to have it

Thanks guys. I’ve been looking for one for years now, and anything I liked was either outside my price range or couldn’t work out a deal that was good for both sides.
My other Sub had a similar issue that resulted in some midcase pitting. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad and my watchmaker was able to remove it and get a good seal with the new crystal. |

Great-looking example with a strong case. Congrats. That staining on the rehaut can often just be wiped away by the watchmaker.

Looks good. Don't think that Orig. Plexi (going by the edge reflection) will buff out. Try and locate another original if not, they are so much nicer than the latest RSC service top hats..

Sometimes you will see people put on a 25-126, which is for a 1680, but the date window is on a different location on a Rolex versus a Tudor.

That has cleaned up a treat - very handsome piece!
I am still on the lookout for a blue textured insert for one of mine, so I am very jealous! New plexis do make such a big difference for me!

Thanks all, I cannot stop myself from periodically looking at this watch. I was deeply in love with my '89 ref 79090, but this is in another league. I feel like a kid with my excitement.

Can I ask where you had it serviced? I have a 94010 in need of some love.
