How to build a relationship with Rolex AD?
Hello Friends,
I want to buy my first Rolex (Preferably a datejust 41mm steel, entry level) from an AD in new condition. Unfortunately, I have heard the it is very hard to get inventory. Can you friends give me advice on how to have a higher chance of getting good inventory? How should I dress, talk, look, to be accepted by an AD? I have cash to pay for a datejust right now but I do not want to go to the grey market. Thank you! |

Walk in, ask for a ladies date just in full gold. Buy it.
Repeat 3x Walk in, ask for a gold Yachtmaster, submariner, or skydweller, buy it. Walk in, ask for day date, take it with a diamond bezel. Repeat once the above once a year. You can throw in random requests in between. |

Don't be someone you're not. Be honest with your intentions and see what they say. There are still some good ADs out there. Just tough to find unless you already had a relationship before all the hype years.

Be yourself and honest. As you would see through someone acting up, they do too. Visit your AD regularly for a small talk about new releases, try watches, show your interest in watches and that you still want the DJ. Remember most from this forum has multiple rolexes and forget about the waitlists still existing (not meant to offend anyone) That said, the times are changing right now and waitlists are coming down. Rolexes are not only for display anymore Remember to have fun en enjoy the conversations with your AD. It'll pay off |

Honestly, I found an AD that sold Rolex plus a bunch of other brands. I bought an omega seamaster that I really wanted and then got a sub date. Funny enough I rotate both and love em equally.

Getting a basic DJ41 is a matter of weeks if not days in America. Was in an AD in college station, TX last week and they had DJ41 for sale with 0 wait. Basic, SS on oyster.

They will happily sell you a DJ now. The charade is largely over.

Just relax and be yourself. That reference should be able to be had at an AD without a lot of extra effort

How do you develop a "relationship" with anyone? Have you got friends? Are you married/engaged? Have you successfully applied for a job or been promoted? Have you scored a discount on anything, or got your own way in a situation by negotiation?
You already know that a "relationship" with an AD is transactional, but if you are the kind of customer who will buy anything on a promise, you'll get plenty of promises and stuff you don't want. Just buy things you want and tell them what you want next. Above all be patient and if the AD is obviously yanking your chain go somewhere else. All the best with it. If you are focused and determined you will score. |

Getting advice for what you should wear?
Just go in to your local AD and sound them out for what you are looking for at that point you might get an indication of your chances |

There is exactly the same amount of hype in terms of AD relationship vs reality. It’s more easier than it looks. Obviously city’s like NY, London, Miami…with more population is more difficult but if you “ look closer “ you will find the gold !

I met a random chick, dated her for six months, during which I purchased jewelry for her birthday. Then, I asked her to marry me, during which I purchased her a 31mm Datejust and a wedding ring. I then asked my authorized dealer, with whom I had a very good relationship by then, for a Submariner for our wedding. Unfortunately, my friendly sales associate couldn't get me the Sub on my wedding day, but it's understandable since only a few are produced. I felt very blessed when my buddy SA called me to visit him five days after we returned from our honeymoon. Gratefully, I'm now the proud owner of a Yacht-Master II! I know it's not the Sub, but I'm just grateful I got the call! Now, I'm left with a girl I don't want to be with and a watch I didn't ask for.

This is about the money, not the watches. I get the AD thing and I do not want to pay more than necessary for my watches but I also know that they are a business and are in the business to make money. What makes you stand out from the thousands of others who approach them monthly/yearly looking to buy watches? Are you famous, rich or important in any way that distinguishes you from others? If not, then get in line, check your self esteem and get ready to be frustrated, unless you are a masochist. As far as what to wear, it does not matter. You could wear a tutu and a tiara and it does not make any difference. I would recommend finding the watch you are interested in, researching the specifics and the history and determining what the watch costs in various forms from the secondary market. Then see the difference from AD prices and then go forward with a purchase. Good luck, we all had to start somewhere.

Do not ask unless you are prepared to purchase. The #1 thing AD's hate are folks who flip flop especially when you are new to that particular AD. Be sure of what you want.

We haven't been much help thus far since there is no single way to dress for success. Nor any specific banter that improves your chance of getting the Datejust. There are some ideas I have but they need some contextual nuances. For example, referral linkage: Look for any existing customers of the AD as a potential referral party. If you share the AD name you're planning to approach, there could be a member here who is an existing trusted customer (did I really just say that out loud?). This way you are now connected better than randomly walking into the AD. Another angle, specific search: Get your mind set on the actual Datejust you want. If you go to Rolex.com and configure the watch you want. What's the size, metal, bezel, dial and bracelet that you desire? Then you can read more about it and be more cognizant of the advantages of owning it - and print glossy photos at the local CVS to bring with you. Just show the SA... This way you come into the AD to ask for help finding the watch you want. If you are going into the AD as a cold call, dressy casual attire, smiling countenance, glib chat with good eye contact goes a long way. Ask for the SAs card and have yours ready to exchange. Have throwaway questions ready: - What do you think of the new CPO program? - Can we look at the dial catalog to see any other Datejust dial options? These don't guarantee anything, this is just how one creates a good foundation. Learn this: The Art of Patience and Pleasant Persistence. You'll appear less "needy" "whiny" or any other irritating retail customer syndrome. Believe it or not, you will be sized up as a potential flipper or a mule for a flipper. Also, the real cheetah SAs size you up for share of wallet and future lifetime revenue value. Just avoid looking like a transactional one-timer and plan to make as many future jewelry purchases as possible for your future gift giving to family and friends. Assess your past purchases over the past 5 years - do you tend to give nice presents to them? If so, your AD might be the best place to make future purchases. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

You should be able to get a DJ41 from an AD within a year. It would help to buy something non-Rolex from them to become a customer. The AD market is really awful at the moment in the US. All the talk about increased availability has not really happened.

How to build a relationship with Rolex AD?
Be yourself, it’s much more appreciated than a persona. Dress however you want. I wear basic unbranded clothing from Amazon essentials.
A simple solid moral principle that should be followed in general and not just for obtaining Rolex include treating others as you would want them to treat you. AD staff are everyday normal people just like you. If you’re terrible at social interactions, maybe read a book and brush up your communication skills. |

I built a relationship with both of the 2 Rolex AD's in my province. After decades of them both selling Rolex they pulled the line from both. Now there is 0 Rolex AD in the province. I had a good relationship with a rep at a boutique for another brand (Panerai). After many years she decided to move to a different store. Its probably not worth your time to be honest from my experience.
