What to do?

I am new to this forum. Googled rolex forums and found this one.

I have a 20 year old submariner blue with gold/silver bracelet.
I am VERY hard on all gear. I am a mtn biker, hiker, backcountry skier and have had to fix my watch three times in the past 20 years.

I just had to send it back to RUSA to get it repaired: a lot of money and the bracelet needs replacing too........Looking at a lot of money......

should I just sell it unrepaired?
Repair it and then sell it?
Repair it and keep it?

I love the watch but feel it is an extravagance not worth keeping.....

You really answered your own question:

They are an extravagance. Nobody needs a Rolex, but to many they are worn and enjoyed and worth the money.

A new TT bracelet will cost more than you can recover for it. If the watch is recently serviced and working properly, it can certainly be sold for a fair price.

Having a Rolex repaired only 3 times in the past 20 years doesn't seem like an extravagance, nor does it appear to be excessive considering your use and abuse.

Whether you keep a watch that would cost you 8 - 10,000 dollars to replace or not is entirely up to you......

well fix your watch, dont sell it, get another Sporty watch so you can do all these extreeme sports that you do, and use the rolex for just hang around...

fix it... and then once you look at it like brand new.. see if you want to sell it or not.

I would fix the watch and keep it. When I know I am going to have a rough day I use my cell phone for time keeping. Hey that is what I do, and it works for me. what ever you chose to do with the watch good luck with it.

If you have the intention to sell it you will probably get more for it as is without repairing it.
If you like the watch and want to keep it fix it and keep it.

For me, Rolexes are items of passion. You have to covet it so much you lose sleep over it, wear and own it with pride, and learn and know everything about it like its history, movement, and variants.

If you question repair costs and ownership, maybe it would be prudent to just let it go.

Anyone seeing this hobby without the passion would really question its expense, while those deeply immersed in it see only the value.

Is there something that you would rather spend the money on; its a large sum. It could pay for a great new cycle or a trip...

If you truly feel that it is an extravagance that is not worth keeping, then get rid of it "un-repaired" because you will NOT recover the costs you will incur by having it reconditioned and new bracelet attached; and it being a 2 tone (gold and stainless) watch, these do poorly on the second hand market.
So it is a lose lose if you in fact not have such desires for this extravagance.
So at the very least, get the thing operational, "movement oiled" and tuned. And shove that puppy out into the EBay !

I had same problem and older it gets less abuse it takes something else to go wrong!

We all know its not cheap to keep fixing these watches, I would buy something cheaper as in CITIZEN QUARTZ and use that for all your rough sports actuivities.

It is painful to send it out for service or repair. It makes a big difference if you can find a non-Rolex repair shop. A major service is still not cheap (can be a lot less than RSC), but minor repairs can be.

If the watch isn't running, you'll get murdered trying to sell it. If it's running but a bit beat up, you can sell OK. I would not have a major service, then sell it. It can be tough to get all the investment back.

I beat the tar out of my TT GMT that I bought in 1973, and gave it to a son about a year ago. Still looks great.
