Sub vs. OP39 White Dial - Thoughts?

I recently purchased my first Rolex which is a Submariner 124060. I like it but am thinking of selling and purchasing the OP39 white dial. The main reason why I'm thinking of making the switch is due to the discreetness of it and it may be a tad more versatile. Maybe it's all in my head, but I prefer to wear a watch that isn't as easily identified as a Rolex.

Also, love the size of the 39mm. I tried on a 36 and 40 but my wrist size prefers a watch in between those sizes.

Would I be crazy to make this switch?

The OP is great, but I always felt the lume to be underwhelming. So, it's hard to say. Just get both is the right answer.

OP39 white is a perfect watch. Having said that, I think you should keep your sub, it's your first Rolex which makes it quite special. If you bought it new from an AD, then you'd be crazy to sell it. Easy set up for regret. By the way the 124060 is pretty discrete. No cyclops, not nearly as "recognizable" as you might think.

You would not be crazy. It's a very unique dial, with a very short production run. I am big fan of both the white and black dial 39mm OP.

One thing to keep in mind, the stock clasp on the 114300 (39mm OP) did NOT have Easylink. However, the Easylink from the 214270 39mm Explorer is compatible with the 39mm OP clasp.

OP 39 white was a great watch for me. I traded it for a Sub date. Regret doing it but for me the Sub Date was needed more: needed date wheel, timing bezel, greater water protection, adjustable clasp. I spend a lot of time in water. If I was more in the office than underwater, the OP would still be on my wrist.

Seriously, keep the Sub and when you get the White OP you’ll have a collection.

Thoughts? Two very different watches. Both no date, one being a sports model that can dive, the other more of a GADA piece.
That said if you’re really wanting discreet the white dial might not be the ticket, black or blue more classic. Not as bold as my coral red and green OP41’s but white is still a less typical dial color. I would say try to add the OP, keep both for awhile, then sell the least worn one if you need to.

OP39 is a fantastic watch, and the dial colour is really beautiful in the flesh. It's a little creamier than in most pics.

Having said that, I would keep the Sub. The OP39 is a lot less watch/features than a Sub. Even if you like the cleaner look, the adjustable bracelet alone is worth keeping the Sub.

The Sub is also more versatile, a true one watch collection. If you can have both, then get the OP39. Otherwise keep the Sub.

Do what makes you happy. The 124060 is pretty much the closest thing to the perfect watch in my opinion.
They’d make a great pair though.

Well I would have to agree, The OP would be more versatile, lighter and just as tough. I really like the all brushed finish as well. But in the end it comes down to which one YOU like better.

I have a Submariner. But I prefer a lighter watch the older I get. The OP is one fine all around watch. Thinking on getting another myself. Hardly ever wear the Sub anymore.

Another vote for adding.

You’ll always come back to the Submariner

The Submariner would be the one. The OP is fine but the adjustability of the Glide Lock Clasp makes it the one for me. I also like the Submariner ND dial.

I'd def keep the Sub as your first Rolex. Having said that, the OP39 is an awesome watch. Getting a white OP39 would be a spectacular two watch collection.

Keep them both. You'll have two very distinct watches that you can rotate.

Just comes down to personal preference, if you think you’ll be happier go for it.

I had an OP39, didn’t last long for me, turns out white dials aren’t my thing (it was my first white dial ever) and the OP (and exp I which I also had at one point) was just a little too simple visually for me, got bored. Now I’ve had a Sub Date for coming up on a year and it’s a perfect fit for me and my taste, have t regretted letting the OP go even once.

Keep them both of you can, however if you feel the Sub isn't suiting you very well then by all means change it. It’s your watch, wear what you enjoy.

Both. Too many cons on giving up the Sub. And both would create an ideal pair.

Keep the Submariner. Add the OP later. Why haven't Rolex brought back the white OP? It was such a clean watch.

Sub vs. OP39 White Dial - Thoughts?

Get the OP39. They are relatively inexpensive. Use it as your daily. Then switch to the Sub on the weekends, when just hanging out, and when you feel safe sporting an obvious Rolex. My 2 cents. I daily my silver OP 36. I feel safer, than when wearing the TT Wimbledon, which screams Rolex.

I think between your wanting something more versatile and discreet, along with your affinity for the 39mm case size all seem like good reasons to get the OP.

As others have said it would make a great pair with your Sub.
If you only want to have one watch, the 124060 will be easier to add down the line as it is a current production watch with lots available. The OP 39 was a short production. If you want to get the OP I would do it now so that you can track down a nice one. The OP would be more difficult, and pricey, to add down the road.

Let us know what you decide.

I don’t think any watch is more versatile than the sub. The reason it is so popular.

After reading the op's, he seems to be wanting to make the swap to be more comfortable wearing the watch. I say make the swap to something more comfortable for you and never look back.

That OP39 in white was a white hot item in it's day! I owned the black version. I regret selling it.

Good luck!

Appreciate all the responses. As of now, I'm leaning towards keeping my Sub and potentially adding the OP down the road. Small reason is I feel like it's a more responsible decision financially given I purchased my Sub from an AD. I'd be paying a larger premium if I bought the OP39 on the gray market which is my only option.

More importantly, I want to keep my Sub from a discipline perspective. I feel keeping my appetite to make emotional impulse purchases in check is important. I really do like the Sub, if I didn't I would sell. My approach from a watch collection standpoint is to buy and hold. I'll have to practice the same thing that allowed me to buy a Rolex in the first place, delayed gratification.
