Is having a stainless sub too similar to a gmt BLNR?

I have a GMT BLNR on jubilee. I’ve thought about getting a stainless sub (not sure which one yet, no date, or date black or date green). I feel like the stainless sub is a great go anywhere do anything watch.

I’ve always felt design wise these two are too similar to both have in my collection though. I think the jubilee vs oyster is really the only major design difference, with of course a functional difference of GMT vs timer bezel.

Been on the fence for a long time on whether there’s room in my collection for a stainless sub given the similarities.

What do you think? Are these watches too similar to have both?

I even find my 114060 Sub too similar to my 126720VTNR GMT. The GMT and now 126500LN Daytona will see the most wrist time.

Nothing like a full brushed steel sub. A diver is a must in addition to a GMT in my eyes.

They are extremely similar and an 7ntrained eye would probably think that they are the same watch from a disrtance (where you cannot see the blue on the bezel), but I agree with this opinion.

A sub is a classic and always a worthy addition

My BLNR is on Jubilee so it does differentiate it, a lot

I’ve been down this road before. In my experience the green sub is a great complement and the black sub is too similar. If in a bigger collection it would be fine, but when I had just the 2 black sub and BLNR in jubilee, it just felt too similar and I always went for the blnr to wear.

This is what I fear. I buy watches to wear. I’d hate getting it and then just having it sit in the case

That was my exact thinking. You will wear it a good amount at first, but if you are anything like me, it will lose its appeal soon after. If the BLNR wasn’t so versatile, I could make more of a case for the black sub. On the other hand, I did feel the LV was special enough and I wore it a good amount.

I think the less versatile BLRO is better matched with the sub LN. The BLNR is better matched with the sub date LV.

Good perspective and I thought about this too…. Hard thing is that one of my “wants” with this next piece is to be my travel “go anywhere do anything” watch. You are overthinking it. Buy it, see how it goes. You can always make a different plan, later, if need be.

Sounds like you already made up your mind. But I have both and it’s a non-issue for me. They get equal wrist time.

I hear what you are saying. I think everyone has a different threshold of what is an everyday watch. I used to think the BLNR on jubilee might not be an everyday, but boy was I wrong. I haven’t taken it off since it got it. So IMO the BLNR remains your everyday and the subLV would be your change-up. When I used to look for an all black option, I thought it was because I really needed it, but in reality I just had the urge to add another watch and used that thinking to justify it. IMO for what it is worth, go for the subLV, you won’t be disappointed.

I have both. The GMT is on a jubilee. The Sub is on a Bracelet. That’s different enough for me.

Being as that I am a Rolex collector i even have the Submariner black dial black bezel stainless oyster bracelet with the movement 3135 and the movement 3235 one I left on the steel bracelet the other one I put on a rubber B black strap, like I said i collect i'm trying to expand on my gmts my daytonas and well I guess I could say all other Rolexes i like to get the combination two watches one with a white dial one with a black dial i have two daytonas like that i'm looking to get the Explorer too I have the white dial and I'd like to get the black dial this is a never-ending collection. I was just talking to tornado this morning about a Hulk in their certified pre-owned program. Have fun enjoy and for me i wear everything that I buy and I keep everything so my collection just grows and I keep enjoying the growth and the variety.

I mostly moved from wearing my monochrome Sub to GMT’s. I occasionally roll out the old school LV if I feel like a Sub.

I have both the BLNR on Jubilee and sub no date. I understand why you raise this question. I love the sub no date because I use it for absolutely all occasions. It goes great with a suit, jeans and a T-shirt or when I’m out riding my Harley Davidson. I choose the BLNR for more social occasions or if I want to add a little more “sizzle” to my outfit. I love having both. I’ve contemplated trading in the no date sub for the Starbucks, but I just love the classic black and think it goes with absolutely everything.

There is always room in the collection for a submariner and a gmt. Redundancy is a myth. I have 3 different generations of subs mixed in with the gmt. Wearing the 116610 LV today.

I can only speak for the 11 series Sub and the 12 series GMT Master. They look different, they wear different and they feel different. They might superficially resemble one another but they are different in more ways than they are similar, more so the 12 series Sub. And of course, their core functionality is different. I'm not a diver but I do sometimes work in multiple time zones. The 126710 on Jubilee sits better on my arm than the 116610 but they are both comfortable and I wouldn't be without either of them in my collection.

Have both. I definitely understand your concern for the similar aesthetic seeing as the GMT model line is derived from the Submariner.

However, in practice, they are quite different watches in both form and function. Get them in varying bracelet styles to further distinguish the two. Even better if you get in different bezel colors.

Details and differences are all in the eye of the beholder. I’ve a 5 digit gmt and explorer II and had desired a sub of a similar era, however, the dials and case are all fundamentally the same, to my untrained eye. Im keeping a smaller collection where I prefer to have completely different pieces vs watches with subtle variations.

Yes. The GMT was conceived in the sub case. As a submariner with an extra hand and different bezel. Just get the Patek travel time.

I think there’s too much overlap, generally. You are contemplating the best case scenario, though.

Out of the two, I would rather have the Sub. Then add a polar for diversity
