Daytona Steel&Gold vs Steel

Good Morning All,

I’ve been doing some buying research on the Daytona for some time, and right now (at least in the UK) the steel and gold models seem to be less expensive than the stainless steel. Specifically I’m looking at the 116503, and had historically ruled out steel and gold for being too expensive.

Is there a reason why this seems to be bucking the trend right now, and would they make a good long term investment? I’m buying for pleasure wearing primarily, and have no intention to be selling.

I’d be grateful for anyone’s thoughts on this.

I don't particularly like the Daytona but to my eyes the TT ones look rather nice and i have occasionally been tempted, although only momentarily. The fact that I could have bought 5 TT Daytonas from my AD in as many years tells you all you need to know about hype, availability and secondary market price.

I have owned several SS Models, two TT Models and every PM Daytona this manufactured. For me, in any model for the most part, it is a uniform metal and not TT. I do like the retro look of TT but I have a hard time paying more for most models in TT. I just like the clean look of SS/PM. As far as value goes it is the market that drives the secondary costs. TT is not as popular as SS.

Would not call watches as investments myself not a fan of the modern day Daytona got to be the most hyped Rolex watch ever. But today hype sells watches as many buy the hype to wear it.Myself prefer the TT Daytona mainly because it has many dial variables over the SS.When the Daytona was first launched way back in 2000 with the first ever chronograph made in-house they were hard to get at retail. And back then you could buy the TT version for the same price the SS was selling on the grey market.

Watches are not investments and I do not care for TT on any watch.

Buy what you like and get what you will enjoy wearing.

If you have to think about future value, maybe you shouldn’t spend the money on a watch/jewelry.

I’ve got plenty of watches that are worth way more than I paid for them. I’ve also got plenty that are worse less than what I bought them for. None of that matters as long as I enjoy wearing them.

Long term investment, no, not if you want it to really appreciate. I think the TT with blue dials that were produced for a while are awesome, but the market didn’t.

Ultimately TT is an interesting halfway thing.

At this point in my life I’d rather go full PM.

Daytona Steel&Gold vs Steel

There are some good buys in the older TT Daytonas for sure. Lot of bang for your buck. Low to mid-teens.

Putting pricing aside, my favorite TT Daytona is the new 126503 with champagne dial and black outer sub dial rings. Chefs kiss.

Thanks for all your insightful replies so far. I am intending to trade in a 116710LN which I’ve had from brand new for a suitable Daytona. It has been a hard decision but the market seems like a good time to make the change. Enjoyment of the watch will always be top priority. I’ve also just tipped into the 50+ age bracket, so TT perhaps seems more appropriate.
