CHNR call

Hi

I got the call for the Root beer which i had been on the list for 2 years, but unsure if its worth the £14.7k outlay, i still love the watch and want a GMT for the collection and have the cash but starting to doubt if it’s a lot to pay for a watch and if that cash would be better invested where i can earn returns…

I have subs and DJ and other watches like Omega, Tudor and GS. The grey market is paying £13.8k and so you can buy on the watch around retail price at greys, so wondering if theres any value in buying from an AD right now or wait? I have no reason to build an AD relationship…

How do people make this decision? Equally im thinking it will always keep value and is a way to diversify assets?

As has been said often, watches are poor investments and you’re always better off putting your money into other investments. I only buy watches (or any other hobbies) if I won’t miss the funds. If you like the watch and can afford it then get it.

Do you desire a new watch to wear or funds to invest, the decision is one only you can answer.

Even though the rule of thumb is not to buy watches purely as an investment, no one wants to buy something to lose value, especially when it involves significant, ahem, financial investment.

I don't understand, do you want the watch or not? If your interest is only in return on investment look elsewhere.

If it’s about making money then I’d invest your money but if it’s about buying another watch and you are going to enjoy ownership then buy the watch. I always think it’s great to look at the things you have collected along the way and what better excuse than looking at a great watch

I agree with this. Don’t look at the watch as an investment. Look at it as something that you will enjoy owning and wearing and passing on to relatives,
That said, it is a Rolex so if you decide to sell it, a Rolex has historically held decent value so you can monetize it, even if it isn’t for a profit

Buy it. Win-Win.

Sounds like you wanted the watch because of the investment/hype and not the actual watch. If you loved the watch two years ago to fork out 5 figures, you should love it now just the same.

If you like it and can afford it, just buy it. No reason to overthink it.

CHNR is the best looking TT/ RG in the catalog and the Brown/Black bezel looks very sharp, watches in general are a bad investment with Rolex you can always get most of your money back, with some models, full PM models forget it! most of the time you will lose quite a bit, unless it has a special dial or combo, rare…. In high demand but not available anymore.

Look at it this way, you will have a new piece from the AD with your name on the warranty card, that you can enjoy for a while and if it gets discontinued or gets hot again it may increase in value? You never know with Rolex. Also the prices will continue to go up as they always do with Rolex, twice this year and again in 3 months, Jan 2025.

If you go grey you will almost pay the same price as new and it won’t be new from the AD.
Now, if the price was 20% lower then that is a different story. For $500-$1,000 less than the AD is not worth it to me.

The bottom line is that only you can decide? If you still like it and are going to wear it and most importantly you can afford the investment, then go for it.

Cheers,

Maybe you should consider telling them this. "I am interested in purchasing a Rolex SS Daytona. I am willing to consider purchasing the GMT as well if it means I can secure the Daytona. Please let me know if this arrangement is possible."

If they agree and sell you the Daytona with the purchase of the GMT, you can resell the Daytona for a profit to help offset the cost of the GMT. This would be a sound investment.

GMT-Master II

Oyster, 40 mm, Oystersteel and Everose gold

Reference 126711CHNR

$16,700

This is the current listing on the rolex's website i don't know where you're getting your prices from but one of the benefits of buying from an ad is you don't have to be concerned about it being authentic or brand new. Your name will be the one listed on the warranty card the only owner of the watch it will be fully stickered to me these things have some value but you have to choose for you, for me it would be a lifetime purchase even if it wouldn't be considered an investment i wouldn't feel as if I was losing money by purchasing it if I had the extra money to spend and it's something I really wanted it's a no-brainer. But you have to sort through whatever you have to sort through and determine whether it's something you really want to buy.

You seem to be very concerned about the investment and resale value. Watches in general are terrible investments notwithstanding the small majority of circumstances. Based on when you put your name on the list, I’m guessing you were caught up in the hype..as were many.

If you don’t love the watch, don’t buy it.

It's not an investment.
If you want and can afford it, then go for it.
If you're going to second guess it, I'd pass.

You should pass and let someone who actually wants the watch a chance to buy it.
And then take the 14k and get some investment advice from a professional.
But it really seems that don’t want this watch, and that’s fine.

Being honest, it sounds to me like you put your name down for the watch while it was hot and going way over retail with a why not attitude.

The call never came as everyone had that mentality. Now the market has shifted, you got the call and it’s loser now.

Whether you have the money or not you clearly aren’t ready to allocate it to the watch so I would pass.
