Watches to avoid at retail
Hey everyone, I'm a frequent at my AD (am on the wait list for a White Face SS Skydweller and the Rose Oysterflex Yachtmaster). I know that I have a long wait for those, and am embracing the idea of being offered things that aren't necessarily on my list but may be fun for a bit to "trade" back when I get the call. I've seen mentions on reddit and other forums of certain watches that are "offloaded" by the AD's because they are undesirable or available essentially new for cheaper than retail.
Is there a list of those to "beware" of? From what I can gather it's two-tone Datejusts, some two-tone Sky Dwellers, but that's all I've figured out. Can someone help me not make noob mistakes here? |

Rule of thumb is. Don't look at watches as investments. And don't buy anything you won't enjoy. Don't buy a substitute watch. Your watch collecting journey will be so much happier if you stick to these rules

This.
I did think exactly that when I was reading the OP’s original post. Both of those watches mentioned, whilst lovely watches, aren’t “desirable” in the flippable sense. The AD might claim they have waitlists for them, but they are dreaming, you would need to be very dedicated to the hobby to pick the phone up for either now. Buy what you love and want to wear. |

I will buy what I like, feels comfortable on the wrist and believe looks good on me. For the longest time, Daytona, 11x Subs and 6 digit GMT dont sing to me, but seadwellers always gets a 2nd look from me though SDs are not very popular model where I am - this doesnt bother me and in fact I prefer it this way as I seldom see it in the wild. Another example is the quirkiness of Milguass and AK fascinates but the 'fat' oyster case didnt go well with me on comfort and theme (for the AK), so when 12XX AK was launched, I tried it on and eventually got mine. |

I would avoid both of the above. Both should be available within a reasonable timescale from your AD without additional spending. Both are available below retail on the gray market

Really don’t think White Dial SS SkyDweller is available below retail on the Grey market. It’s commonly available for retail plus tax in the grey market, so just buy from the AD.

This. Plus, never settle. If you settle for a piece for whatever reason, i.e. availability, finances, etc, you won't be truly happy and, in the end, will always be thinking about the piece you should have gotten.

Avoid buying anything you don't want to wear and enjoy! Wearing a piece on your wrist that you truly like and are enjoying is the best ROI!

Wish TRF had more watch talk, and less buy sell trade investment speculation talk.
