Buying a preowned Rolex

Hello, first time poster.

Recently got interested in watches again when I found an old Seiko that my parents bought me ~20 years ago as well as seeing my dad wearing his 1982 Rolex datejust again.

After researching different Rolex models, I fell in love with the sport watches, especially the stainless steel Submariner and GMT master 2. Just my luck they are pretty much a huge shortage on those.

So basically I’m going to all the ADs nearby and checking around and waiting for the call on a stainless steel sports watch.

After browsing online, I found a local seller selling a 2014 116610LV.
After conversing back and forth and him sending some pictures of the watch, warranty card, receipt it all seems pretty legit. Things that set off alarms is that he will not meet at a watch store to authenticate the watch, basically giving his excuse of the last time that happened it ruined his watch because of them taking it apart.

My question is can a person fake the watch’s serial number that’s on the warranty card, sales receipt and rehaut to all match?
$8495.95 was that the price of the “Hulk” in 2014.

Pretty much not buying it unless getting authenticated at an AD, but posting to see what you guys think.

Sure that can be done.

It starts with a scammer who buys a replica watch. The s/n on the rehaut is the same for the hundreds that are churned out by the rep makers.

Then forge the documentation using replica warranty cards sold on eBay and anything else they want to fake like hang tags and receipts.

The cardinal rule is buy the seller first.

Do fakes have unique S/N? Or are certain S/N well know for being fakes?

How much does he want for it? You will also need more pictures. Pictures of dial, serial number, bracelet numbers etc. Theres all tells on the replicas but without better pics its almost impossible to say for sure. Also even with better pics to be sure you would need to open up the back and see the movement. Does the seller have original receipts when they bought it? Buying the seller is key. Theres plenty of trusted sellers here that sell legitimate Rolex's. You dont want to be that guy that makes a 10K+ mistake!

Here is the supposedly receipt, a receipt he initially couldn’t find, but somewhere in the house.
But found later after I keep stating that I wouldn’t buy unless the watch gets authenticated

The sales tax on the receipt equals less than 7%. I’m pretty sure the tax rate in Chicago was higher than that in 2014. The current rate is 10.25%

I see this is the hulk that is on Craigslist. The guy is in Crown Point and is only asking $8000. Steal of a deal if it is real! Good luck with your decision.

I bought a Hulk new from an AD in 2014 and the receipt did not say Hulk because 1) Hulk is a nickname 2) The nickname Hulk wasn't popularized among the general public until after 2014 if my memory serves. 3) AD's do NOT use a watch's nickname on official documents like a receipt

Oh, one more thing. I can tell you really want this Hulk to be genuine. But in critical thinking, when you really want something to be true is when you should be the most skeptical.

$8000 is in the too good to be true range. He could sell that all day long to a reseller (Govberg, WatchBox, Crown and Caliber, HQ Milton) any day of the week for that price. For $8000, I suspect it is either fake or stolen, neither of which you want a piece of. No Rolex dealership damages a watch by taking off the caseback or bracelet. That excuse he gave you is nonsense.

Definitely want a stainless steel watch, but without getting it verified at an AD I would never purchase it.

Stolen he could walk into a jewelry store and easily get 8k, why bother with the hassle of craigslist shoppers which in general are flakes? Not saying you are, but why even deal with that type of hassle.

The cardinal rule for me is always pay w AMX or pay pal. Check it as best you can , then pay w pay pal or AMx. When you receive the piece go to Ad to have it checked out. If it’s not what as represented, simple - dispute the charge and send piece back.:-))) james in San Antonio Tx

As stated, for that price it could be stolen, who knows.

Maybe stolen, OP did you run the serial through the stolen watch register, based out of London. Of course might not have been reported.

Plenty of watches out there, without taking the risk to be honest.

someone wanted the S/N to look up in a registry to see if it was stolen
