I can’t believe the difference between the amount they offer for your watch compared to what the list them at. I have 2013 116520 which I’m considering selling as the last few times I have worn it I haven’t enjoyed it and was thinking of using the money to buy a pm.
I can’t realistically sell on here because I don’t have any history and eBay worries me the a high value item so I’ve asked a couple of greys so far, one has offered 10-11,000 but has similar watches listed at almost £20,000 and another has offered 12,300 and also has similar watches at just under 20k. I know everyone has to make a profit, I thought perhaps about 3k markup but I was obviously wrong. I wonder who’s taking 10-11 for a decent 116520?

Have you tried getting a price from WatchFinder? Apparently they give a good prices.

Maybe this is a sign of what is happening in this the supposed softening market, the greys know they can’t achieve £20k for these and probably preparing to make the same margin from buying at a lower price. That’s my 2 pence worth.

Before you accept a low offer, maybe put up a few £ up for a Pledge Membership here and make an advert in the FS section?

Everybody on this forum - from the highest volume trusted seller to the part-time hobbiest had to make their first sale sometime/somewhere. This might work out better than you thought...

Many people see the asking price by greys and presume it’s pure profit for their own model. When it is a preowned model, condition is the major factor, followed closely by risk that the watch needs major work done before it sells.

The days of getting only 20-30% margin are gone. Greys are now looking to maximize returns like any business. That’s what a seller’s market offers.

Some ADs have learned to push desirable SS models out the back door for almost 50% margin compared to what they earn selling at MSRP. That becomes the COGS for a grey.

It isn’t uncommon for a grey to try for an additional 40-50% which is pushing BNIB up to the levels you see.

I will take a different approach here. You want to flip your 116520 because you worn it a few times and have not enjoyed it. Is that right? First slow down and relax. What you need to consider is this, it will be very hard to source another if you jump too soon and sell. And if you do, you will pay through the nose for a $12,000 watch. Secondly, I have my issue (serious ones) with the Daytona but it’s helpful to take some time to consider a move. I wait at least several months after that feeling to make and definitive moves. Many things can create dissatisfaction, reading too many watch blogs for instance, and buying into the hype of new means better.

Here is what I learned about myself. In thinking back over my 30+ years of being into watches, I can’t think of a single one I did not get bored of and had the thought of selling. Now, that’s crazy. Take for example my 16610, I got married in that watch, honeymoon, birth of my sons, funerals, etc. I would be crazy to sell it as it is associated with so many memories and the watch is an icon. What many of us are really chasing is that doapamine high created by a new watch. Make that flip, and likely a few months later and the same feeling will sit in.

I’m not saying don’t make the move, but wait a couple months. There was a fellow in the forums recently that was considering selling his Daytona (a PM I think). He put it in the safe for a while. He brought it back out after a while and found that he loved it again.

I wore it quite often for the first few years of ownership but it is still in excellent condition because I try to take care of things. I have found it being banished to the safe for longer and longer periods for the last 2 years and wear my 16710, 116710 or 126300 in rotation almost constantly. When I do wear the Daytona I think it looks nice but don't seem to enjoy it like I used to. I don't know, perhaps I'm just bored with it being another black dial watch or maybe the hype of the Daytona has put me off. It just feels like a lot of money sat there that could be put towards something that feels like it's special and worth the perceived value of the Daytona, if that makes sense.

Well certainly looks like you have put some thought into that. Have you considered having Rolex change it out to a white dial?

If that won’t do it, then maybe time to move it on and prices are good. I have had good offers on mine so shop it around. I have serious issues with mine (excessive shine, poor legibility) but find the white dial very versatile and seems to fit the bill as a great vacation watch.
