Why is the Yacht Master not as popular as the other sports models?

I agree that the name is unfortunate. It doesn’t conjure up heroic figures like a fighter pilot (GMT), Navy Diver (Submariner), or Sir Edmund Hillary (Explorer).

In reality, Rolex could have named the nautical watches as follows:

YM 1: Submariner
Sub: Diver
Sea Dweller: Master Diver

Unfortunately, while that would have avoided the Yacht Master name and stigma, it would left the YM 2 with the title Egg-timer.

I grew up on the New England coast and have been around many yacht clubs. the watch was named for the yachting lifestyle and fits in perfectly with this culture. I think the advertising concept for the YM2 is the best rolex has ever produced. obviously advertising is not enough...

Just like yacht rock, which represents a soft, bland version of rock & roll, the Yachmaster represents a overly polished, sterile, and muddled version of a Rolex watch. The Yachtmaster is the Rolex equivalent of a keytar.

I like the grey dial the best in pics, the bezel looks fantastic as well along with the PCLs making it a dressy Sub to me. This is one I've been waiting to try on in person at my AD. So far I've only seen the 37mm.

Does the YM have a Twinlock or Triplock crown? Normally a yachtsman is not worried about depth/pressure, just wind and spray, similar to the environment of an EXP II.

Rolex buyers are not value shoppers. They pay $15 k+ for a $9000 GMT because it has a different color bezel insert. I think the YM is beautiful but just a little too pretty for many people's taste. I like them a lot but just wouldn't see myself wearing it very often. It's just not me. I had the same problem with my white Milgauss, it's beautiful to me but also flashy and bold. I don't dress flashy or bold.

I think pricetag and the fact that it is a platinum bezel that people can't truly appreciate it and much rather save 2K to buy to themselves an SS Sub/GMT (when it existed)

I, for one, am glad it isn’t as hyped. I think it’s a beautiful watch and I love my rhodium dial. I haven’t had any issues with the bezel scratches. It’s pricey, but I think it’s worth it. To each his own. You’ll find those for or against every item on this earth. Wear what you enjoy. Who cares what the masses thinks. Sometimes this Pepsi/Batman hysteria reminds me of the old Tickle me Elmo/beanie baby craze of the 90s.

What a splendid watch! The dial with blue hands is mesmerizing. I would have bad time trying to take my eyes off that dial.
Tell me about the bezel, is it as they day hard to maintain due to the titanium material. I've heard that if it scratches it becomes hard to polish.

The bezel is platinum, not titanium. To be honest I don't know. I've not seen any 20 year old YMs with any significant problems on the bezel. I imagine it is a bit hard to polish because the inner parts are specially sandblasted at the factory. However, I imagine if sent to RSC for a service, they will know exactly how to deal with it.

I think scratches will show much less on this than the Daytona gold bezels which are smooth and uniform.

Amazing piece. The new one Rolex introduced this year on rubber strap is breathtaking. Too bad it's not steal.

It is certainly less of a tool watch than a ceramic sub but on a par with a non ceramic Daytona IMO whose bezel is very susceptible to marking.

I love my blue YM. The bezel may end up getting dinged, although mine is perfect despite decent wear on the polished centre links, but if it get damaged I'll just replace it. The way people baby their watches nowadays it really shouldn't be a problem and it's just a consumable part if you are very rough on your watches. If the cost of a bezel stops you from enjoying a watch you have bought the wrong watch.

On a separate note, the YM is one of the only modern sports Rolex that may develop patina over the years as the bezel ages. It also isn't a super popular line. All the makings for a future collectible? Perhaps...

To me the Yachtmaster stainless a gussied up colorful Submariner. The PM RG & WG Yachtmasters with the black bezel are one of my favorite looking Rolexes.
