I live in St. Louis. What area are you going too? You should be fine. I wouldn't in certain areas. Just depends on where and what times you will be out.

The reality of major cities in the US is that many are undergoing gentrification. Most are still works in progress and that creates environments as described above. Affluent areas that border dilapidated areas with all the nasty crime stuff, that includes robbing you of your Rolex. You can stumble from your fine dining experience and luxury accommodations into a dodgy part of town before you know it...then you'll be "how'd I end up here"...and that's not a fun trip. Happened to my friend in a large city in the Western US. He had never been to the city before and was staying in a high end hotel for a convention. He figured he would be able to walk around the area and do whatever....well he noticed that things started to go south rather quickly....to the point where the homeless guy came behind him and urinated on him...so...he didn't go walkabout again after that. The key here is know where you are, where you are going and don't get lost or just wander around to sight see. That's how you get in trouble...Rolex or not. |

Every major city in the US has rough areas....if you are not a resident of the subject city, then spend some time beforehand getting familiar with the areas of the city in which you will be visiting.
To say you will just wear a expensive Rolex and not worry about it....is plain Stupid. In summary, you should be Street Smart and familiar with the territory ...if any doubts - don’t ask for a problem by drawing attention to yourself with a very flashy expensive watch. |

I wear my Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for situations where I don’t want to wear a Patek or AP.

I've walked around everywhere in the shadiest places in Detroit with a YG DD40 showing everywhere many many times.
In fact many other cities worse than Detroit - just dont act a fool and if you look like a timid little guy well obviously just use common sense. You know if you would be a target from potential robbers yourself. Your not oblivious to what others will see and portray you as - if your seen as "easy" target well you know what to do. |

My advice is that if you have to ask, don't wear it.
There are too many very nice, inexpensive watches that are better suited to visiting areas of the world that you are not familiar with. Familiarity is really the key. Almost everywhere in the free world, there are safe places and dangerous places and sometimes the difference between a safe place and a dangerous place is one block. I learned this the hard way and it's the way I conduct myself and advise others.

When in doubt, leave it out.

I've usually travelled wearing a Rolex, except a trip to South America. I just wasn't 100% comfortable, so went with an inexpensive Casio on that trip.

If I felt my watch was in danger I sure wouldn’t go such a place myself. Have worn nice watches all over the world, including some war zones.

I live in St. Louis, you’re perfectly fine wearing whatever you want. Just don’t walk around at 2am flashing it around, same as any other big city. I feel safer in St. Louis than Chicago.

Per another thread...it may be safer than taking it inside of a bank in broad daylight.

I would say if you are discreet and the watch is insured, you shouldn’t have to worry.

I won’t leave Canada, except for Vermont, with anything but either/both of my entry level Omegas.

If I have to question if I should wear my watch to a certain place then I probably shouldn't. You asked maybe because of obvious reasons so I would leave it at home.
