Am I the only one who didn't find Ricky Gervais' monologue that...scathing?
I honestly didn't think it was that "bold."
He said some jokes about Leonardo Di Caprio (which he took very well and laughed heartily) and did the same for Scorcese and his (lack of) height- who also lol'ed and even agreed. Then there were the digs about Hollywood's "holier-than-thou" attitude, a complaint increasingly embraced (shockingly) by both ends of the political spectrum- and, I might add, a growing portion of Hollywood stars themselves. And you could hear it from the laughter of the audience itself. So what's the big deal? He didn't say anything that's "shocking" or even "needed to be said" that no one has said already. The only bold thing I thought he did was that Judi Dench joke- which, I might add, the audience dug into. Hell, you can even see (spoiler alert) Ellen Degeneres and her wife beaming in anticipation right before he delivered the punch line. The Comedy Central roasts are (or, were) far, far more brutal.

Stephen A. Smith once said, "Lets be nice, we don't have to go there. I mean, you're not wrong but you didn't have to say it".
It's just all the stuff people want to say but DONT because it wouldn't be PC and it would create criticism that could potentially ruin anyone else's career. Luckily for Ricky, he's able to say it bc he doesn't care

It was tame. An easy $1M for Ricky.
The Comedy Central comparison doesn't apply since its on cable and one is a network family prime time show. |

I thought it was super. I didn't watch it originally.
But enjoyed the clips I saw very much.

I like Ricky Gervais and think he's a great comedian and writer, but don't forget these are media conglomerates at play here.
Get out the buzz it's going to be controversial with dozens of media outlets and hundreds of bloggers etc. Spin Spin Spin for a month to try to crank the show's rating up. Then more buzz buzz afterwards for the Buzzfeed, TMZ,et all crowd, and for Utube owned by Google. It's all noise and media manipulation. |

I only saw the beginning of the show, because I left the TV playing after the football game ended. I thought the monolog was pretty funny, and then I turned the TV off as soon as the actual awards part began.

He said what I was thinking. He’s the only reason people watched.

It is shocking at how entitled some of these people appear.
And oblivious to reality all while lecturing the rest of us on how we should be living our lives. I thought it was great that he stuck it to them a bit.

It was pretty tame by his standards, and his shock factor has worn off. Moreover they all ignored him. There was nothing earth shattering about what he said, it's just his delivery that's unique.

Happened to keep the TV on after 60 Minutes. And loved every minute of it. I think had it been on cable he would have teed off even more.

I enjoyed watching the highlights of it. IMO the world is too PC and he's a breath of fresh air.

Here's a tweet from Stella McCartney talking about Joaquin Pheonix for those that may not have seen it.... "This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you... x Stella" I'll just leave it there..... |

He said it right at them, that was the point, these lot are so insulated and pampered and revered that not only was it a huge shock for them to have to take it while being filmed, but also good for them to see how much the public have agreed with his comments on them.
Markle and Harry have also been subjected to harsh criticisms of woke hypocrisy and they are now on the verge of stepping down as senior royals and moving to Canada. |

It was a play and most in the audience were actors. I don't think anybody was offended. To the contrary this attracted attention to the event.

Yeah... somehow the cameras, live, know exactly when to catch Tom hanks squirming, etc. it’s not coincidence.. it’s rigged and staged . Typing this from an Apple device now. In sincerity, Apple does operate sweatshops. It’s sad.

I like Gervais in his comedies, like Extras, but not necessarily his stand-up routines.

What makes actors and actresses think that their political opinions are more relevant then non show biz people? Personally I find it repugnant when I hear an actress spouting off on a topic, or politician. What are her qualifications to judge anyone? I can enjoy a performance by someone but please no politics. My own regard for any “A” lister stops when their performance is over. I wonder how many actresses, who’s career is in hiatus, doesn’t use their perceived fading fame, after consulting their agent of course, to grab some publicity by making a statement.

The arts are also generally in large urban areas which are also more liberal than rural areas. As for using their platform, I guess it's human nature to use what you have to further things you believe in or believe are injustices. Remember it wasn't many years ago black performers even in places like Vegas could not stay in the hotel they performed in. (See Sammy Davis Jr/Frank Sinatra) And gay people are still discriminated against in places. If people aren't aware, climate change is getting CRITICAL, and the apathy is unbelievable. Most people will use any soapbox available to them as you have done here. It's just how people are, wanting to get their points and opinions heard. Our only recourse if it bothers us is turn it off. |

But for actors spouting their opinions is because someone IS sticking a microphone in THEIR face. If there was no cult of celebrity, perhaps we wouldn't have studio marketing shows like Oscars, Golden Globes, People's Choice.......et all. |

That doesn't make their opinion of greater value, does it? Or are you saying because there is this "award" ceremony that therefore their opinion is more valuable? Can they not just thank their co-workers, families, etc without spouting off political garbage?

I said it's human nature to use any soap box you are given on subjects you are passionate about. AND these televised opinions do bring about change. That's why they use them. If the producers of these phony awards shows thought the opinions were hurting ratings they would eliminate them. |

Agree they take every opportunity to lecture with their socialist political crap, Like Rick said do not lecture anyone, they do not care and this Hollywood liberal elite they live in a different world. I always wonder how would they fare living in Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and so on ...
