I think it's not the protrusion that makes it uncomfortable, it's the diameter and conical shape of the caseback. SD43 is a heavy watch and weight being distributed in a smaller area makes the overall feeling of discomfort for some. DSSD on the other hand, even if it is heavier, will feel more comfortable since weight is distributed to a larger area.

Having said that, I think an owner just needs to keep wearing it to adapt and get used to the feel since it's a gorgeous watch.

If you like to wear your watch loose or not fitted to the wrist you may experience issues with size and casebacks more than an owner who wears the watch fitted firmly. Just my thoughts.
Agreed
This is the crux of the matter along with wrist shape.
Personally, I have never warmed to the SD of any vintage because it always felt as though it was perched up on its Case back when set up the way I prefer to wear my watches(just a little loose).
The DSSD is significantly different in that the Case back is somewhat more recessed into the Mid-case.
Hense the slab sided nature of the DSSD.

In summary, the recessed nature of the DSSD Case back makes for a more comfortable fit on my wrist when it's a fraction on the loose side.
If I were to wear them tighter it would be problematic for me on a number of levels.
But for someone else it could be perfectly fine.

I was one. I actually couldn’t wear it as it hit a tendon and put my hand to sleep. What was frustrating is I wear even larger watches very comfortably like 44mm Panerai. I moved the clasp around and tried every bracelet link combo before I ended flipping the SD43. Oddly enough I can wear a DSSD JC more comfortable. Some watches are just not a good fit for everybody.

This is one of the issues I face when it's snugged down tighter into the back of my wrist.

It’s one of the few watch’s in over 30 years that caused me pain like a pebble in your shoe.. I have a flat 7.25” wrist and I couldn’t make the SD43 work.

I’m another one who tried multiple times to make the SD43 work. Hurt me as some others said. I read a ton considering the case back. End the end, the DBlue was far more comfortable. That’s what I went to. We are all a little different.

What do you think the chances are that Rolex will fix this? I think they may have just slapped on the previous SD4k’s caseback, which as we know had a smaller case/profile.
The caseback on both of those watches actually protrudes by a similar amount, however the SD43 sits better on my wrist because the protruding element of the caseback is smaller than on the the Deepsea, allowing it to sit in the hollow between my wrist bones.

Must really depend on the size and shape of the wrist because I have never had any issue with the case back at all. I guess if you have a thinner bonier wrist it could cause a discomfort, but no problems here.

Definitely a wrist shape thing in my opinion. I have a 7.5 inch flat wrist and love the fit, also one of the reasons I love the fit of the exp 2 6 digit, comes down to shape of wrist more than anything in my opinion.

I got the first one my AD received when if came out, this has never occured to me as an issue. I doubt Rolex will change anything about this watch for a long time. I believe the caseback size and thickness is partly what makes the depth rating so high. Well, deep.

Precisely.
It's a part of the DNA of the SD and born out of the purest tool watch design concept from a totally different era.
It was always form as a product of function over comfort and style.
The SD was never really popular with the masses with two outright discontinuations and re-inventions in its history.
That was until the current red text example.

It’s a Sea Dweller!
The deeper caseback has and always will be a part of its charm and design.
The depth rating reflects its size.

The perfect watch imho

I like watches that sit flat on my wrist with the middle case touching my skin. I think a watch thats sits high showing a gap between the middle cast and the wrist looks bad. The only way to achive that with watches such as the SD43 is to wear very tight which is uncomfortable to me .

No problems with my case back on SD43. In fact I find it so comfortable I forget I am wearing it at times.

Smaller footprint of the SD43 caseback works better for me as the larger ones get sticky when working on hot summer days.

Specifically now thinking of my cheapo Citizen Titanium with full size flat caseback. Terribly uncomfortable in sweaty environments.

SD43 I just adjust the glidelock one notch bigger and all is perfect. Much more breathable if you can call it that.

Based on my own experience I believe that the additional case back protrusion from the mid case of the SD43 (or the SD4k) is an illusion. It's certainly not as different as many think (based on my own experience)

Not my picture but demonstrates it quite well (I accept its not very scientific)

Completely agree. It's a total non issue for me.

Raising individual comfort and fit complaints to the purported level of a design defect in this instance is totally unwarranted imo.

How much different is this caseback than the SD4K? I have a 6.75 inch wrist and I find the caseback of the SD4K nestles right into in my wrist and sits very comfortably.

My wrist is flat. I could see if someone has a rounder more muscular wrist which didn't allow for the caseback to nestle in how it could be floppy and uncomfortable.

6.75" wrist and watch wears very comfortable one week on. No issues from caseback or feeling of it being top heavy.

Wear it snug, had diver's ext. removed at AD but re-installed it and removed 2 links to compensate as it sits in a spot that seems to accommodate, and wanted to keep that function if possible.

Very impressed with this reference overall in both comfort and wrist presence.

The case back protrusion and the thicker case make it sit a little high. Wish they could package these thinner it might be nicer if it was thinner overall, but with the 22mm lug width, the proportions look good. If I had a smaller wrist it still works around a dive suit with the steel bracelet or on a nato. As a daily wear watch, If I had smaller wrist would prefer the submariner. or perhaps the discontinued 40mm sea dweller.
