Agree with you entirely. Many people forget what originally brought us to the brand (and forum).
Thanks for the reminder! |

It was reading about Rolex the company that first sparked my interest in owning a watch from a company like that.

I agree 100% with the OP. I never got caught up in the frenzy for a new piece so my perspective is very different from that of our more fervent members who are collectors. I guess I'm just a bit more Zen than most.

It reeeeeally is! Such an amazing complication in how you set it. Whomever thought of using a rotatable bezel to change things, and mechanically making it all work seamlessly, is brilliant!

You're right, the invented the first to make one water resistant which helped getting more adopters.

OP, I already thought well of you but this profoundly insightful post almost brought tears to my eyes. The avalanche of complaints of the past two years or so has been grinding me down to the point I thought of leaving this otherwise excellent forum. And I am an upbeat person by nature.
One thing is certain, I am constantly amazed by the wealth of of forum members. Hundereds, if not more, many of whom self-identify as working class, have circa 10K or more to plop down on a watch and complain that they can't get a certain model. And then they blame Rolex for not producing enough of THEIR model. Your post puts these complaints, and Rolex as a company, into perspective. I for one am glad Rolex exists and I am thrilled that their business model is successful. I will remain on this forum knowing that OP and the other laudatory posters share my sentiments. Thank you for the touching post. |

Great post. I love Rolex and admire very much the genius and foresight of Hans Wilsdorf. He made all the right moves to create and establish this brand and then left a top secret set of instructions on what his company is and will be in the future. It’s a formula that even in today’s business climate has made Rolex ultra successful as a private company.

Thanks To Wife: Decided that 2020 is going to be glorious and happy, thus choosing to smile more, laugh more, help others more.... My lovely muse/wife and i have an awesome relationship, we have never argued, etc and she pointed out how fortunate we truly are. She's truly my better half. She notes... When your 'backyard' looks like this, it's time to enjoy the amazingly wonderful life we have together (plus stop reading and participating in less than positive things online that sucked me in during 2018 / 2019). Can't say it enough, thanks everyone here for... everything. And so many thanks for my better half, she truly does look after me in so many wonderful ways (and at times knows me better than i know myself!).

It's not just a rotating bezel but a bezel style that's widely recogniseable and synonymous with Rolex that previously had no function other than to mitigate against showing damage and provide outstanding bling factor(except the very early days where it was a screw down arrangement). Then to go and expertly utilize the existing design contour to provide grip for turning to easily set the functions. Magnificent |

I'll be the naysayer here and suggest that while Rolex the company makes excellent watches, they shouldn't be given too much other credit. Rolex exists to perpetuate Rolex, and the company is not a charity, it is owned by a charitable trust. That trust has refused to ever disclose how much charity work they actually do. Rolex does donate money to various expeditions and causes, which they then use in marketing materials. Great watches, but that's as far as I'd go, personally.
