Computer question
OK, computer people:
A little window just popped up to let me know that Windows is running low on virtual memory, and it will be expanding said memory to help me out. What is virtual memory, and what can I do that would be proactive on this issue??

The amount of virtual memory your computer has available is controlled by a simple setting. On Windows XP look in Control Panel: System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory. I believe it's in a similar location in other versions of Windows... usually running out of virtual memory means that you are running to many programs at the same time for your system or one of them is attempting to use too much memory. You might also want to check out what's running when this happens and how much memory each program is using. I hope it helps carol...

Sounds like you have too many resident programs running. That could be voluntary or your machine is virus/malware infected.
Start Task manager and see if Commit Charge (K)" "total" is near the "limit" as well as whether "peak" is near "limit". Also, do you feel the computer "sluggish" as if the disk is always "clicking"? To change virtual memory settings, assuming you're running XP, 1. right click "My Computer", goto "Properties", 2. select "Advanced" tab, use the "Performance" "settings" 3. select "Advanced" tab, and you'll see "Virtual memory". You can change it there. Make sure your virtual page file is in your local hard disk and usually people lets the system to decide how big is the virtual memory. |

You should probably run an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program. Also, quit all applications, restart the computer (after adjusting your VM setting as mentioned above). What programs are you trying to run? Usually I only ran into VM issues when I was running Photoshop, Word, and a couple other programs at the same time with 1GB of RAM. No issues with it now since I upgraded.

I had a couple of browser windows open, as well as a PDF document. That's it. Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a try!

A simple restart will clear any virtual memory issues.
Three other bits of advice. 1. Max the RAM in your computer, it's the best and cheapest way of improving performance. 2. If you use Windows, always keep your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware up to date. 3. Dump Windows and get Linux or use a Mac. Thus point 2 becomes obsolete. :-)

I would recommend restarting your PC daily and to add more RAM.
Virtual Memory is hard drive space that is utilized when your RAM has been exhausted. This increases defragmentation on your hard drive, reduce performance and potentially lessen the life of the hard drive. |

I get lazy, and sometimes forget to restart for several days. I restarted earlier, and it seemed to solve the problem.
