All the above you wouldnt want to pick the Merc over the BMW.

S Class v 7 series.
S class wins.

They both depreciate rapidly but i prefer mercedes amg over bmw m . I have a sl55 and g55 which are technically my wifes cars but drive them frequently. They are nice everyday cars nothing over the top and they also can be expensive to repair. I would not buy new but recommend certified.

If you think the bmw m is a drivers car just drive a black series mercedes. It is awesome. The SL black is a little pricey like the SLR for me and had to pass.

My friend is in the market for a new car and he's been test driving them all the luxury cars. I went with him to test drive the C63 AMG and it has the performance, but he said the M3 was more fun. The strange thing was the Mercedes floor manager tried to down sell him to a C300.

You should consider Audi as well. In Germany, where all three are made, I'm told the Audi is the premier sedan. The upper end cars (100k) of all three manufacturers are all competitive.All three manufacturers are great. My next car is going to be that new Ford Hybrid.

This is a very popular rental company in Germany, I believe the only Audi they rent is the TT...

You must drive both to get a sense of how they feel/handle...completely different approach. I prefer the handling of BMW, and the comfort of the MB. Therefore, I drive an Audi, which for me is the perfect balance of the two, and absent the characteristics of either MB or BMW that I dislike.

2001 E320 needed a new engine at 28000km.New bottom end needed .Bad attitude from Mercedes.Never ,never,never again !!

Wife had a 1999 328i ....sold at 165000km .... not a single problem !!

I have a 330d auto 2003 .... 130000km ... perfect !! Great car,not a single problem ever !!

Recently bought another one... a late 2004 330i with only 20300km on the clock,at rockbottom recession pricing. Their are some great deals to be found !!!

So,I now have two E46 BMWs and couldnt be happier.Great cars,low purchase pricing and very low insurance cost.

I think that is true with pretty much all of the European luxury cars. They all have a high cost of ownership.

I love my BMW, but I am glad that it is still under warranty because things come up now and than.

I have had a few BMW's (328 - 540 and currently my wife has a 335) and 2 Mercedes (C230 and E350). I just gave back the E350 in January. That day could not have come sooner. I was soooooooo glad I leased it. It was not worth anywhere near the residual. Great big ole car - luxury - not so much. Big and cushy yes - In the shop a ton..... Breaks were a joke after complaining enough the replaced them at no charge but, It was not much fun - I think I agree with Daveathall completely on the analysis above. Not sure about the mini part.... Cool cars but, not for me... too much junk to carry around.

Favorite car so far... Beside my first Honda Accord (just loved that car) is my current car the Lexus I350 (Honda). It is fast, sporty and very comfortable. Great technology.

Soon, I need to move into the Mid-SUV type car and I am torn. RX 350, Audi Q5 - I think BMW is out - even though I like the "no service" cost program...

My preference can be summed up in three words - Bavarian Motor Works. This in no way diminishes the fact that Mercedes makes excellent cars. I just prefer BMWs because I feel they corner better and are more fun to drive.

Regarding benz performance...... when I was a young punk in a z06 years ago I pulled up next to an old fella in a convert MB V-12 bi-turbo..... he was drinking a big mug of coffee at 5am ........ I eased off the light briskly as I always did in my z06..... and he nails it...... so I nailed it too..... working as hard as I could with each gear with partial traction......... well..... this old fella blew my doors off with one hand on the wheel and the other holding his coffee..... I believe he even took a sip of coffee during this pizzing-competition..... the mb had zero traction issues, zero drama, and zero effort on the part of the old-fart :)..... MB can build performance cars.

The wife is chatting more about an offwhite 400+HP BMW as he next car though..... so we'll see. I'm not sure what model would fit this description..... I'm thinking M3?

Lets face it better is a relative term. The CLK63 black series is a rocket and I would take over any BMW period. It doesnt mean its better I just like it better. The SL Black is to pricey and will depreciate like a stone in free fall. In the end it is personal choice. To me the cars are comparable regardless of price since the topic is merc vs bmw.

I have not heard that before. Audi has a significant racing history. All three companies entry level sedans are in the same price category with Audi being more than BMW.
