Don’t want this to appear like the sub equivalent of the Daytona bashing thread

I’ve never bought a standard black dial sub and I’ve been collecting for a very long time

The reason is it’s far too bland.

I like stuff that’s a bit quirky or different. I’ve always been like that, not just with watches.

The closest I would buy, but I passed on, and wish I never did, was the matte dial sd4k

I do obviously own other black dial watches, but they either tend to be matte or black but with colour or flair elsewhere

That said, I feel the DJ checks the boxes I would use a sub for so I’m more focused on other brands/models for now.
I was gifted with just about the same DJ though mines have the Blue dial ....... love it for the past year or so that I've owned it but I've recently have my eyes on a SubC with the date. The 36mm...... for me ...... just seems a tad small for my wrist.

Just trying to decide whether or not the extra cash is worth getting the newer ceramic dial and larger case vs.a non ceramic and smaller case .

There are also equivalent/better dive watches out there for less money if you can look past the fact that they don't say Rolex on the dial (which I can't). Thus, I am grabbing an Air King to hold me over.
So you want a bigger dive watch (they make the SD with the splash of color) and you go for an air king which at least appears far smaller than a sub.

Sub is a nice watch but since I'm a commercial pilot the GMT Master ll made more sense and I prefer the comfort and look of the jubilee bracelet.

I had my heart set on a sub back in the early 80's, and was saving to buy one, when my best mate beat me to it, and bought his. I didn't want to be the same as him, so I bought a 1016 explorer instead. He sold the sub to finance his first Porsche about 10 years later, I was never into cars, so I still wear and enjoy mine.

I passed on a Sub because I thought it wore too small. I wanted a larger and thicker case and a wider bracelet. When the SD43 was introduced in 2017 it was an answer to my prayers!

I’ve turned them down 3 times from different ADs. I don’t know why because I’ve gone in to place orders and each time, for some reason, I decline.

I love them in pictures but there’s something that niggles in my mind. But each time I still go back to wanting one. I think the few factors that put me off are the number of fakes, the amount of people that wear them, and the fact that they’re pretty bland. All that for the best part of $10k puts enough doubt in my mind.

Of course, I know that people say buy what you love and ignore what anyone else wears or thinks and I do just that. I can’t quite put my finger on exactly why I have never taken the plunge.

Me!

Can't believe I did that after the months of wait. AD called me and inform they got one for me. I could actually buy it and flip it but not something I wanted to deal with and hopefully left it for the next guy on the waiting list who will appreciate it.

Reason: Generic look, fat lugs, didn't feel anything special to me.

On the other hand - I lost my mind over the 126710 BLRO. Every millimetre of that watch is designed as if someone asked me how to make it .. The bracelet, the bezel, thinned lugs, even that small R crown on 6 .. Just perfect .. Hopefully one day It will arrive with my name on it.

Exactly what happened with me.
Couldn’t bare how small 40mm SS models looked on my wrist neither how narrow the bracelet lugs width. Then I tried this one. The rest is history.

Subs looks really normal n uninteresting to me n there are so many lookalikes from other brands.

I went for yachtmaster blue, Airking n 16710 pepsi and......Grand Seikos.

Living in NYC, I do see them ALOT so all depends on location. I would imagine Los Angeles as well.

I wanted another Sub until the SD43 came out.
No going back. It’s the perfect watch for me.

Current Sub is just too big/chunky for my taste. Decided on Rhodium YM, as it’s a) more versatile in my opinion, b) less widely owned, and c) easier to acquire new. But also looking for a vintage Sub if the right one pops up...

To me, the Sub is the quintessential Rolex. What has kept me from buying one is the Sea Dweller 4K. So similar in design, but with far more water resistance. I've always been seduced by specs even if they won't mean anything to me in the real world. Plus my all-time grail watch is close in size/shape to the Sub. That would be the 5-digit GMT Master BLRO.

The Sub is a great reference. I went with an Explorer because I wanted a bit more versatility. Ultimately scratched the diver itch with a Tudor Black Bay ETA.

For day-to-day, I wanted a slightly thinner watch. The dial of the 39mm Explorer is larger than the dial of the Sub also.

I’m thinking - Explorer 1 over Sub. I don’t dive so I don’t need 200m+. The sub is very common, very recognisable, perhaps a little too much so. I like the low key, but eminently capable Explorer 1.

It’s such an amazing watch, but I passed, because who doesn’t have one? Wanted something a little less prevalent

Another one here. I tried on a 114060 a few times back in 2017 when you could still find them in stores and thought I was 100% sold. Started saving towards my goal while occasionally visiting the AD to chat and one day I happened to slip an Explorer II on my wrist and the angels started singing. That’s when I truly understood what people mean when they say “get the one that sings to you”.

The EXII SANG gospel to me while the Sub only softly hummed some elevator music.

Obviously much harder to try before you buy nowadays, but if there’s any way possible you can try some different models on, you’ll have an easier time.

I just got my SD4K this week and I couldn’t be happier. It just feels better than the sub and wears smaller yet more substantial.
