You can also place important items in a small burn-proof file and place that in the same for added protection for important documents and watches.

I bought the cheap gun safe just to have a safe to keep my guns from my little ones. And then got the gun locker from a friend. I have not upgraded to the proper safe yet. Lots of money for good 25 gun 2.5 hour fire rated safe.

I'm still new here, but I LOVE this forum! You guys are TRULY AWESOME!!

So, here is my simple safe. It holds my watches, cell phones, passport, and important docs., even a place to hang my spare keys!

Its water proof, fire proof, etc. and actually has some AMAZING ratings! And weighs about 100lbs or so (empty).

It has a numeric key pad, a round key, AND FINGERPRINT sensor!
You can activate one or all 3! Its GREAT.

I've attached a few pics... its BOLTED in to the ground from the INSIDE.

Just a thought guys, but to get security AND fire rating in a safe requires a big dollop of cash.

Security requires steels = gets very hot
Fire safety requires ceramics = not secure

To get both in the one unit is either a compromise or VERY expensive (and big and bulky)

A friendly locksmith told me a cheap and cheerful solution is to get a very solid heavy-duty safe (which will usually only have a weak fire rating and then just get a "fire-box" (looks like a small esky made of foam) and put THAT in the safe!!!

Kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

Springer is right on the money. I have a Liberty and as time goes by more things wind up in it than what you originally bought it for. For added piece of mind important papers are kept inside a small fire resistant file, inside the safe providing a longer burn time. Lastly its all for naught if it isn't bolted to the floor. You can move the thing by putting it on schedule 40 pipe and rolling it, probably has to be seen to be belived thou. That is what is used if you don't have a dolly to move it. I have the same one as Tools just green.

One thing to keep in mind when it come to safes, is all the so called gun safes are not tested as safes by Underwriter Laboratories, they are considered 'home security containers,' and face a different testing criteria than a true safe. I would guess ozarkguns and casadecamporolex both have legit safes. With that in mind, I would be very leary about the so called fire ratings on these home security containers. Several years ago a good friend have a house fire, his guns were in a, I think, Liberty top-of-the-line fire safe, everything inside was destroyed. I am not trying to throw cold water on you guys that have these kind of safes, just passing info along, your safes will be fine under 99% of all circumstances.

I took my pics down, but I have a lot of $$ in my gun collection, I want it as secure as I can make it. Almost at attempted thefts we will face is someone breaking in and wanting a quick score, they want to be in and out, the reality is, if someone has the knowledge, skill and time, ANY safe/vault can be broken into, to think differently is pulling to wool over your own eyes. I imagine most of these safes could be opened pretty quickly with an oxy/acetylene torch, sure some things will be damaged, but they can get in. Again, the average crackhead that is responsible for the vast majority of burglaries will not get into one of these safes.

I'm satisfied my vault will defeat all but the most serious attempts to break in, but as I said, if someone really wants in, they're getting in. To me, fire is what scares me, I'm never had a house fire, but for some reason this is my greatest fear. My walk-in vault was too small the day it was poured, I knew it, but it went in the only logical place it could go; if we add on it will be enlarged. I have 8" of reinforced concrete for walls and the ceiling and that should give me plenty of fire protection, not to mention theft protection.

we have a very large heavy-duty safe in our basement - forgot the make/model...
the movers that installed it had to set up rails on the basement steps to get it down there.
so unless 4 very strong men break in, and install a rail system down to the basement, no one is taking off with the safe.

we plan on leaving it if we move.

Emmagee brought up a good point and I just went and checked my safe. It does have a Underwriters Lab sticker on it stating that it is a "Residential Security Container" guess I need to go check and see wha that criteria is.

There is no speculation or false information given, as I said, they are UL rated, but not as a safe, but rather a home security container and there is a difference. HSC's run the gamut from the $149 Wal-Mart specials that you can get into with a pair of tin snips, to quality products like a Liberty, etc.

I am in no way knocking Liberty or any other gun safe out there, I used them for years before building a vault and felt perfectly safe with them. I did it not only for the security, but also because I needed more room than multiple safes would give me, hell, I need more room than I have now.

My only reason for pointing out the UL rating is because what many folks refer to as safes, are not safes according to UL and do not meet the more stringent testing. Also, as I pointed out, these safes will serve 99% of the people 99% of the time.

Mark, in your search check out the safes you can buy from a locksmith/store. I own an AMSEC safe which is rated for fire, water and theft. they came highly recommended from a reputable locksmith. The safe can also be bolted to the floor!!!
It was very expensive for the size but well worth it for the peace of mind!!!

Kevin, this is almost exactly like the one I have, except mine has no key or fingerprint entry. Other than that, it's the same SentrySafe. Mine's bolted to the concrete, but I have some doubts as to whether that makes it conpletely secure. Seems to me a thief who is running high on adrenaline could easily work those screws out of the concrete with enough effort. Any thoughts on this guys?

I would go with the liberty brand. They have excellent service after the sell and will, in some if not all circumstances, replace your safe with a new one at no cost. You can get the presidential for $3800, if you search, and it will hold nearly everything the average person would ever collect or get a lower model. Check out their website and they list the price there but you can do better at a dealer than buying direct. Safe sales are on the rise since the economy is in the toilet.

LOL Just like buying a Rolex!!!

Actually, I got my Presidential for under $3M at a local locksmith, which is truly a pittance considering what will be in it. I worked him for sale pricing and no shipping (5% more off) because he didn't have what I wanted in stock but was able to call and add it on to a order he had just placed and paid for already.
