How much is warranty worth to you?

Hi folks,

Fed up with AD games and looking to buy gray. Without getting into exact prices as I know that specifically is against the rules, I'm curious to hear what members think warranty is worth. I am looking at a few 116500s - most all are in excellent or near mint condition. Let's call their conditions equal for this purpose. Given Rolex's 5-year warranty, each of these has some left...

Option 1 - Warranty Dated September 2017
Option 2 - Warranty Dated September 2019

Again, without getting into prices of the watches themselves...Option 2 is $1k USD more than Option 1. Do you think the extra 2 years of warranty is worth $1k on a 116500? If this were a Tudor GMT, I'd say yes (sorry Tudor GMT, owners). But with the reliability of the 116500, I'm thinking the 2017 is a better buy.

FWIW, both watches are from the same trusted seller.

I wouldn't be too concerned with warranty on either of these watches. It seems to me you're essentially looking at $1000 more for a watch that is two year's younger. Do you see value in that?

$500 to $1,000 max. If you like the watch, it's in good shape and you want it... screw the papers! Buy It! Wear it! Enjoy It!

Two more years on warranty and it's two years newer which also means two years less wear so the '19 makes sense.

Condition would be the bigger concern with the age difference in the watches not the warranty. Talk to the Trusted Seller and get him to tell you the comparison in condition. If the same, then I would take the less expensive one. If not then the newer one. At 1K difference for the warranty you are paying $500.00 a year for the newer watch. If all is equal I would buy the older watch and save the money. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Assuming same condition , and at the prices these are trading , I would pay the $1k for the newer watch. But I’m also risk adverse by nature .

I don't see value in a watch that 2 years younger. For example, if both watches were out of warranty, then I'd go for the younger, presumably cheaper, watch (again, both are in the same condition). But that's not the case here. Here, I am specifically wondering what 2 years worth of warranty is worth.

I don't really care for box/papers, but warranty can be something of value. But if the warranty is never used during my ownership, then the extra $1000 will have been wasted on "peace of mind."

I don't think 2 years newer means 2 years less wear. No one truly knows the history of wear except the prior owner(s). It could have been sitting in someone's safe this whole time. So I don't buy that argument.

As mentioned in the first post, the condition of each is near mint. So for the purposes of this scenario, I'm calling them equal. But I am leaning towards saving the $1k. In all my life of owning cars, watches, cameras, and other expensive electronics...I've never made a warranty claim. Hoping this won't be any different...

If the same condition me personally would always go for the newest one, i prefer the surety of a warranty, same as you never have really used on anything but gives piece of mind, one other small factor is the service will be due sooner on the older model, maybe not really an issue but still money out the pocket earlier.

The age of the watch isn't key, the condition is. I've seen a 2014 vs 2018 GMT at the grey, the condition of the 2014 is like new, the previous owner pretty much never really wore it while the 2018 one looked like it's been worn and polished.

So for me if they're both the same condition yet still under warranty, I'd save that $1K and go for the 2017.

Doesn’t even enter my mind and I buy all of mine grey. Never had to have a Rolex watch go back under warranty

Split it down the middle and offer $500 more for 2019. Whichever you choose is fine provided the condition is the same.

To me the 'added value of a warranty' can't exceed the cost of servicing the watch.

Option 1 then get it RSC serviced in 2 years time with the money you saved. You’ll then get it back like new with 2 years warranty.

I think it’s a fair question. $1k is still $1k. He obviously isn’t totally against the idea of spending the extra $1k, otherwise this wouldn’t be a question and this thread wouldn’t exist. But if given the option to spend $1k less, I’d happily. A penny saved is a penny earned. Or maybe that’s just poor folk thinking.

warranty card. but you didnt get my post. the point was if you can get a 2020 114060 buy that over a 2013 model if you can afford it.

Once the warranty is up, what’s it matter? Again, assuming condition of both are the same.

A full service is 700, and you get a two year warranty from Rolex with it. Why pre pay 1000 if you most likely will not need it.

Don’t let warranty come into your decision on which one you want. Get the one that is in better condition.
