Basel 2009 - came in with a BANG, crawled out with a WHIMPER!!! SHEESH!!!

Hi guys,

So all that hulla-balloo about Basel 2009 finally came to zilch, bugger all, nothing and a total waste of time.

The long awaited 41 mm DJ was a total disappointment. I wanted it on the Super Jubilee, but all they did was bring out some weird looking dials with flowers on them (what the hell were they thinking??!!) and even the normal dials were asymmetrically designed and looked pretty cockeyed to me.

Then, of course, we had the 2 famous TT Subs. The Blue colour, as expected, was all wrong; but, in all fairness, the BLACK one does look terrific - what the new prices are going to be is anyone's guess!!

As expected, quite a few totally unaffordable Pars Hilton and David Beckham bling models were introduced........but most of them were garrish and ugly.

So what the heck did Rolex give us this year from Basel 2009? Bugger all!!!

Hey guys......just stick with your present collection and don't make the mistake of selling any!!

The ONLY really SUPERB model to come out of Rolex in recent years is the GMT-IIC (and maybe the DSSD) - end of story......and end of this vent too!!

JJ

For me the star of recent times is the Milgauss GV.

The only Rolex I am actually looking forward to is a GMTc with a Pepsi or Coke bezel, preferably Coke just in case of Smurfication of the blue.

Ya you are right. The only thing that caught my eye for 30 seconds was the Tudor.

Everything else was kina frightening and looked like my dog barfed it up.

Glad I got my IIc and did not wait for anything special out of this years line up

That's right, Paul.....sorry, I should have mentioned the Milgauss - a very good introduction along with the DSSD and the earlier GMT-IIC.

Maybe true, buddy......but at prices most of us will have to think about more than twice before plonking down any kind of cash on the AD's counter.

My advice again: Hang on to your current collection!!!

From what I've read JJ I have to agree with you, not just in general but specifically on each point. Next year will bring the new SS along with its balooning price, you'll need to take out a mortgage to buy one. This year saw no real surprises other then no surprises

I must totally agree!

What, in your Rolex collection, would you trade now for what came out in Basel this year?

Me......... Nothing!!!

JJ is completely correct, as usual!

JJ I agree, however I feel once the new 41's start rolling in the showrooms and our forums with members I think it ll pick up, hopefully even in jubilees. It will have a similar either hate it or love it appeal just like the DSSD and daydate II, im sure the new tt sub will also grow into us!

And to think I almost past up buying my GMT IIC because I thought something better, like maybe a Pepsi ceramic, might come out of Basel 2009.

I have to disagree about the DJ II, the black baton dial almost made me have an accident in the trouser region....

But the Blue Sub is a definite miss, as far as I'm concerned.

I fully agree JJ. By the time the Coke GMTc arrives it will be priced well beyond my interest level probably.

Time to track down a 16710 I reckon.

Don't worry JJ, the new DJ 41 mm (in more conventional colours) is nice, IMHO, and I guess it will be available soon in the AD shops also with the jubilee bracelet ...

Ciao

Engi

P.S. I fully agree with you, the GMTIIC is the best Rolex of the last years, and for this reason I bought mine ...

By your logic, Rolex, which is a global brand, should only cater to "western men's fine tastes and understatement''. Your logic also suggests that making flashy watches is a recent phenomenon to cater to the "tasteless new markets like Russia, China and Middle East'' and that in a couple of years, Rolex will come to its senses and stop making these watches.

Apart from making poor commercial sense, you fail to recognise that Rolex have been making solid gold, diamond-studded watches for decades and that these watches are not just sold in non-Western markets but all over the world. If Rolex were to exhibit the snobbery that you demonstrate, I think they would be nowhere as successful as they are today.
