My new 116660

Hi , guys
I did go on a bit last week about the weight of a Deepsea . I could not believe the up to 15 grammes difference in weight that was quoted on the net .
Anyway , I went to get one in Spain , as you can pick them up about 1500 USD cheaper ( if you hackle a bit ) then in the rest of Europe ( UK is interesting too if you come in with Euro ) . Anyway I got my brand new V-reg 116660 for about 7300 USD and I got rid of some cash that was lingering about . If one tries to pay such amount in cash in France the shopkeeper will call in the fraud squad and seal of the premises . Its much easier in France to walk out with a new Rolex paid with a stolen or bouncing personal check then cash .
So here is the beast :
It does weigh a ton but you really know that you have a watch on you . Its a man's watch ,my wife used to "borrow" my 116520 till I bought her the daytona Saco "leopard" 116598 ( 2005 -F reg )
But surely she is not going to be able to wear that clock .
The clasp is an absolute marvel of engineering , the overall quality is astonishing . To be honest , personally I was getting a bit disappointed with Rolex recent models , a bit too fashion orientated not what one would expect from Rolex that has earned his name on the robustness and reliability of their products .
Lets admit that this watch may be just a little large and thick , it may not have the same slick look as a Daytona or some of the Panerai watches you can't expect a Sherman tank to look like a Ferrari to do what is does. But lets face the facts : You will not be able to take any other watch down to 3900 m ( and more ) not that I will neither , but it is a bit like nuclear weapons : you do not have to use them , but the cheer fact you have them and you know what they can do , reassures you .
I can say only one thing : Rolex is back up there and nothing can touch this watch for the moment . I expect that only Rolex will surpass itself in the futur on that one ... maybe a COMEX version ?

Just one question - does the bezel rotate smoothly and only in the anticlockwise direction? The reason I ask is that there was a thread on TRF a few months ago where a Deepsea owner complained about his bezel rotating in both directions. Also, when I checked out the watch at my AD about 5 months ago, I found that the bezel didn't really click as well as on the Sub or SD 4000 (ie it was too "loose''). My AD said this was a problem with the early models and Rolex would fix it, so I'm wondering whether they have. Thanks.

LOL Singslinger...still worried about that one problem bezel experience!!! I would hate to think what you would do if you fell in love with a new car yet your buddy experienced any type of problem w/ a similar new car...I'm pretty sure you would never consider buying one again.

Not that I think it will help too much, but I can honestly report I use my bezel at least once or twice daily - every day - for the last 6+ months and have ZERO issues with it. It is an earlier M serial, has zero slop & plenty tight. I even took it diving a few weeks ago and the bezel worked flawlessly on the surface & down at 60 ft. If anything, I think it's actually a little tighter than when I first purchased...but I think that has more to do with build-up of dirt under the ring and not enough washes. Again, if your bezel concern is the only thing keeping you on the fence, I think you're being a little too cautious and need to just go out and buy one (and the thread you spoke about was more than a few months ago...we're now approaching almost a year after that issue).

There are a enough DSSD on the market getting a lot of use these days to hide any type of real bezel issue problems...I've got to believe if there really was an issue we all would be hearing a lot of complaining/horror stories and that just doesn't seem to be the case. As expected w/ any model, there will always be a handful of stories regarding problems/freak issues...nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time. It's a great watch with a great bezel...now go out and treat yourself...you can thank me later!

I think your AD was talking to his hat. I have never had one phantom bezel turn and it certainly doesn't rotate both ways - and it's an M serial.

I know you love the SDDS Singslinger - go and get one mate.

I think that the bezel problem , if there is one , we would have heard about it before. I certainly hadn't , and believe me I read all the feedback I could find ( the reason I joined this forum ) before buying one . Maybe the AD was only trying to get you to buy something he had in stock and hence not the Deepsea . Mine is a V2209** reg and I can assure you that the bezel only goes counter clock wise and it sounds a tight and precise as my parents "Fichet" strongbox ( safe ) dial (Believe me it is precise as I spent half of my youth trying to open the bloody thing ). I have only worn it for a day now , but no worries in sight with the bezel . Go ahead and buy one .
Sure that if there would be a problem you would only take it back to your AD and Rolex will surely go out of their way to fix it .
So don't hesitate , jump right in the watch is a beauty .
