A huge percentage of the population lives paycheck to paycheck and would never consider spending $2,000 (let alone $7,900) on a stainless steel wristwatch.

That’s an interesting perspective. No one said whether people want to buy a $7k watch, but if they could if they wanted to. I stand by my observation, that it’s an attainable goal for most people here. If $7k is not attainable as a once-a-life extravagance in America then we are a poor country indeed.

Quite clueless observation. It’s like saying a $80,000 Porsche or $10,000 handbag is a reasonable once-in-a-lifetime extravagance for the average American.

Average citizens are worried about paying the rent, buying food, filling their prescriptions, and figuring out how to send their kids to college.

Well, we have seen articles on Bernie's mittens, so I guess Biden's watches were the next thing, since they've exhausted the topic of his Ray Ban Aviators.

He wore a watch appropriate to the occasion. Let's hope he performs as well during his time in office as his timepiece.

It would be a false front to deliberately wear a Timex when that's not his actual preference. He's certainly not living beyond his means, which might be of concern, from a security perspective. He obviously has a genuine interest in watches and his tastes run to classic brands, Rolex and Omega. He chooses watches constructed of stainless steel. They aren't flamboyant and neither is he.

I'll bet demand for Ray-Ban Aviators and Datejusts will increase...

Weird talking politics here. But I will say that I think Biden knows exactly what he's doing. The man was a Senator forever and then VP for 8 years. He knows wearing a Rolex so prominently could cause some blowback like the article in OP. He could also have continued wearing the Omegas he has previously been seen with. Or gone with a Timex or whatever be more "of the people".

But a Rolex is a ROLEX. Basically to most people that don't know watches, it's the most expensive watch you can get.

The Democrats have gotten a lot of heat from the Republicans about being socialists and their desire to soak the rich. I'm not expressing any personal opinions or political views, that's just been the tone during the campaign.

I honestly think Biden is trying to send a message that if you are wealthy and successful and wear a Rolex, don't worry, I'm not a Socialist, I will be a President for you just as much as the guy that can't even afford a watch.
