Opinions of a nato on a Vintage?

Get a Phoenix nato. UK made and former supplier to Rolex.

Also those high compression rounds don’t fit the era of that watch!

NATO straps generally look pretty ordinary but bright coloured ones simply look horrible. They were made for a purpose but each of the watches pictured above would look far better on a Rolex bracelet or a good leather strap.

Agreed - and NATO straps were made for fixed lug watches that had no other option. Personally I can’t bear them.

Hello Richard beautiful pieces....I have a couple Rolex buckles but they are on Rolex straps...did you order yours from Rolex without straps? or get them on eBay? I know there’s fakes on eBay but those are nice!

Thank you! I enjoy my collection. :) I also enjoy Rolex buckles on straps, they are a nice. finishing touch. Unfortunately, Rolex doesn't provide SS buckles in 20mm so as has been discussed before I sourced some from Hong Kong. This was many years ago and the Hong Kong people assured me they were quite genuine but I had my suspicions. :)

I’ve had it about a month! Sat in a draw at my fathers house since I was just a kid.. was given to him by my godfather who bought it in a bar in the 70s from a Vietnam vet for 30$! And story checks out seeing as they were only sold on military bases on the production date of this one which is 1969! Sort of fell into my lap..

I want you guys to look at your nice natos and take a nice close sniff of them. Like a nice deep sniff up to your nose. Mine get pretty smelly gross, And I’m a clean freak!

I like my natos but they also jut out and I hit door jambs more freq with them in place. Comfortable though

My father wore the 1803 I gave him on NATO-type straps exclusively while he was alive. He grew up in British Palestine and said there were only two effective options in that setting: the leather straps with the snap-over leather cover (for chronographs and complicated watches, to keep the sand/dust out) and the Nato/nylon/cotton style. Shout out to harry in montreal: my dad used to WASH his Natos weekly in dish detergent and scrub with an old toothbrush to minimize the ick factor.

The smell can be hard to get rid of even after going through the wash. What I've done, and it works like magic, is to soak in a mixture of borax and hot water, for a day, then put them in the laundry machine. I use a mesh bag, makes them smell super fresh

I love Nato but watch out for the Perlon strap, they're smelly and dangerous in the long run, look at the marks left on my father Eberhard...

I’m a big fan of nato straps. As someone said, Phoenix the original supplier still produce straps. They have admiralty grey and a wonderful khaki green. They can be found on eBay.

Cut off the keepers, the under-strap, trim the tail and it would look ok.

But I’m not a fan of wearing two watches.

Love it, it goes totally under the radar and always fun to mix and match as it can change the feeling/comfort of the watch.

I think they can look cool (especially army green, black and grey) but I don’t like the wrist presence. I like my watch to drop with gravity to sit snugly against my hand and a nato always seems to get stuck up my arm and caught on my jackets, etc. And I’m always fiddling with it to get in the right place on my wrist. So while I do opt for a nato from time to time, I always seem to go back to my bracelet and wonder what I was thinking...

holy moly you are a lucky fella........back then it was the cheapest Rolex you could buy ( I think ) - now its one of the rarer and more expensive references. The chances of me finding one & while having the money to buy it, are non existent.......but I can dream!
