We recycle...we do our bit. We have two cars but try to limit the use of them and we try and buy fair trade or environemntally freindly where possible!

Did some yard work in the morning. Few things better for the Earth than a healthy lawn! It was beautiful and 25 degrees Celsius yesterday.

Unfortunately by noon today it was -5 and snowing to beat hell.

You have to love the Weather in Calgary. Sigh. That's why we don't plant flowers until middle of May.

We held off burning our garbage until Friday. Ah, the smell of plastic burning in the morning.

I remember burn barrels in my youth, and was quite surprised to see poeple still using them. At the doublewide, most of the neighbours still burn their trash, yes even all their plastic. God what a terrible smell. Of course they do this on the weekend when we go to the lake. Don't get me started on what they do with old car batteries and used motor oil. Sad when the neighbours consider me up-town.

Sounds like up at the lake some are going to turn the area into toxic waste!!!

Probably not a safe lake to be around. A shame.

Of course? It takes way to long to break down in the back of the leaking pick-up truck sitting in their front yard. Burning trash still goes on in very poor rural areas of Georgia and Alabama.

Can't the police at least cite them for this? Or would that open another can of worms.

These are poor, poor, poor folks with little to no education. Not making excuses, but this is the way they have been raised. Most have sold and taken their money and ran, but a few were born in the homes they live in and they are happy where they are. Not sure if there are any laws, in general, about burning. Can you imagine the 911 call.

Your stories remind me of the Canadian sitcom Trailer Park Boys.

I know, I know - sort of reminds me of the rural mountain areas of NC. I'm just thinking of everyone in your area breathing in noxious fumes. I realize it's just a different way of living.

One of my neighbours/friend is SAC (FBI) out of a large city and when we first moved in we were outside talking and one of the neighbours started burning their trash 1/4 mile away from our places. He only uses the lake home as a get away and he looked at me and said, "in these parts you pick your battles very carefully". Sound advice. Finally, other than a few other quirks, they watch over our places, cut the grass, and call us if there are any problems. Man, the smell of burning milk cartons is gross I tell ya.
