14060M vs 5513

I'm looking to buy my 1st sub. looking at a 1989 5513 and a 2001 14060M. Both are almost the same price 2000 to 2500. Which would be a better choice and why as to be honest they both look the same to me.

May be a tough question to answer "for you" without knowing more "about you."

How are you planning to wear the watch? What are you looking for? There are obviously a number of technical differences that folks here will no doubt weigh in on, as well as value-retention, et cetera.

In the end, these, I think, will help narrow what inevitably will have a "value judgment" discussion.

Well speaking for myself would choose the 5513 both excellent watches with very reliable movements,but the 5513 is more the classic non date sub.

Both are excellent choices
As Dell pointed out the watches are quite different which makes it difficult to give you an advise.
Me personally would go for the 5513 but it depends 1st on the personal taste and 2nd what you yourself expect from a watch....

I probably end up wearing it on a nato as a daily wearer. Are both movements the same and reliable?

A 2001 14060M Cal3130 28800BPH movement,and in the 5513 Cal 1530 19800 BPH movement.The 1530 is the last generation of this IMHO one of the finest and highly regarded movements Rolex has ever made, before they changed to the 3 series for all the mens range except the chrono.

The 14060M will also have a sapphire crystal. The 5513 is plexiglass I believe.
Pros and cons here too. Sapphire very much more scrtach resistant. Less glare/reflection from plexi.

I am probably in the minority here, but unless you are really into vintage watches, I would go with the 14060, because (as I have argued before) it is a better watch. Higher depth rating, improved movement, sapphire crystal (which under normal conditions is much more durable) plus for an every day watch, I would go newer.

The 5513 is held in high regard as the classic sub, but I would prefer to take advantage of the upgrades Rolex made in the 14060, which were substantial and useful.. JMHO

I have the 5513 and it is my preference. You can polish the crystal so scratches aren't really a problem. I just like the 1530 movement, that slower beat still works as accurately as the more modern movement, and the vintage aspect just adds more character and ye old e world charm.

Both great and, properly serviced, both will serve you well. The 5513 may be slightly more comfortable on the wrist.

I'll go slightly against the grain on this one..

The 5513 might be my preference...but I rotate between a dozen watches and am not concerned about scratches on the crystal or parts for the movement...

What I would be concerned with though, if I wore the watch daily, is exactly that, the movement and the plexi, as well as the bracelet and the lack of lume or breakdown of the lume on the dial...

They are all old....Rolex has stated publicly that they will phase out parts inventory for the 15xx movements, and if the bracelet is 20 years old, it may show some wear that is dificult to reverse..

Therefore, If it's for every day wear...I would go with the new movement, new crystal, and bracelet in relatively new condition on the 14060M..

they both are great watches, my preference would be 5513 as I like plexi glass but Larry's comments make sense as well. What condition are the watches in and do they come with boxes and papers?

Here is my 5513 with Gloss Dial and Gold Surrounds. Hands have been replaced and are Tritium. Most folks here do not consider the Gloss Dial with Gold Surrounds as vintage. I for one like the look of patina with Gold Surrounds.

I'll go with Larry on this one given the timeframes of the two watches. Had it been a matt dial 5513 that would be a no brainer for me.
