Help with trade completion!
Hi all,
Any psychologists here (watch or otherwise) who can read my personal opinions on several of my watches and help tell me how I truly feel and what I should sell?? The story is, I've been pining after the 126610LV and promised my wife that if I got it I would trade for it, out of my abundance of pieces, rather than buy it outright. I convinced her that I should get the LV first, see how much I like it, then I'd be more informed on what to trade. CLASSIC MOVE RIGHT?! So, I love the 126610LV, and now I'm stuck figuring out what to trade for it to make good on my promise I keep arriving at two paths: trade Rolex (Rolex for Rolex), or a bunch of non-Rolex. I like all of these, and my preference shifts like the weather. Contenders: Rolex: Yachtmaster 40 blue. I've got several subs, and will typically pick them over this, but this also represents something different in my collection. I like that it is often the forgotten/overlooked step child of the modern sports pieces, though that seems to be changing. Also, I think the proportions and comfort on this piece are the best of any modern Rolex. 16610 2009 V serial. As mentioned, I've got other subs, in black the 124060 and 14060m, and also the SD4K (see below). I prefer no dates generally. The thing holding me back here is that this watch is the icon for me growing up. It's the one I aspired to. My "collector" brain kicks in rather than my "just enjoy watches" brain, and I say I got to have this in my collection. It's not like I don't enjoy it - I love the proportions (better than any modern reference) and think it wears better than the 14060m as it is a bit more substantial on wrist. SD4K. I love that it is the only 40mm Rolex ceramic diver without the oversized lugs (was not a fan). I love that it is unique and rare, so I can feel different wearing it. I love the matte dial. At the same time, I don't love the thickness relative to the size of the watch head, and feel the lugs/shape/end links could have been even better in line with 5 digit proportions. I will also reach for this one less than my 124060 or my JC D-blue. Non-Rolex: Seiko SLA 017. I've probably tried all Seiko diver watches at some point. I landed on this as the most classic. It is probably serving a stop gap function in my purchasing, meaning if I've got this one I can tell myself I don't need to keep buying other Seikos. I love the rubber strap for it in terms of switching things up, but I don't love the rubber strap in terms of it being too long for me and being a dust magnet. I appreciate the rarity of this piece and the fact that I am unlikely to encounter anyone else wearing it. And that people will think it is "just a Seiko". On the potential downside I've also got the SLA037. Seiko SLA 037. This one feels more modern to me than the SLA017. It feels more youthful (I am on the younger side). I like the strap better in terms of fit, and I have always been more of a blue watch person. I also like this piece for all of the same reasons listed for the SLA017. That said, if I had to pick between this and the 017, I tell myself that I've already got many other blue pieces, including the BB58 blue, and if I'm going to keep one of the 037 and the 017 then I should hold the closest to the original (the 017). Breitling Navitimer a23322. I've always had a thing for Breitlings and wanted a navitimer, but the size of the modern references have been holding me back. I got this one at a good price, and it sits at around 41mm, which is perfect for me. I enjoy it as a switch up because I have few chronographs, compared to divers, and few breitlings. That said, the version I have has the printed rather than applied Breilting wings, which bothers me sometimes. My version is also in black, and I'd prefer blue. Omega seamaster 300m blue (41mm). I've been enamored with this watch going back to the James Bond movies (yes the Pierce Brosnan ones). I love the case size and proportions, especially compared to the newer and bigger models (with even bigger helium escape valves?!). The rich blue is classic. I love the look of the bracelet, too, but do not love the lack of adjustability (I guess why they updated it), and it can also feel bulky due to not tapering. The bezel action feels underwhelming. I'm feeling to move on from this, but I'm not sure I'd get much for it to make it worthwhile, and I'd have to let go of all of the nostalgia I'm attaching to it. |

I value comfort and likelihood of wearing the watch, so here are my picks:
Rolex: SD4K (thick and you already have JC D-Blue) or 124060 (your new LV represents the current generation of Sub, and you like the feel of the 5-digits better) Non-Rolex: Either of the SLAs (probably keep the 017...just change the strap) and the Breitling (not your preferred specs...you just got it at a good price) Best wishes |

From what you are pointed out above would also pick SD4K as a potential piece to sell

Thank you both for taking the time to read and for your suggestions, which make sense to me!

Erm yeah but correct me if I’m wrong. You’ll have to trade the YM plus ALL the other non Rolex pieces - unless it’s from and AD?

SD4K is my favorite diver.....but if you dont find it as comfortable as other divers in your collection, i would move it. And FYI, I personally like thicker watches. Everyones different.

If it was my collection, I would let go of all 4 non Rolex (I prefer Rolex) and either the 16610 (having the 126610LV) or 14060/124060 (having the 124060/14060) or YM blue dial (not a fan of the YM).

I have other pieces that I'm not on the fence about selling, so I've omitted them from consideration, but they would make up the difference. Out of what I listed here, I think I would need to part with just one Rolex OR some combination (at least 3/4) of the non-Rolex. |

Trading is obviously a two way street and the thing to consider here is that your existing Rolexes will be easily tradable towards the LV as they will be universally accepted by dealers..no problem at all.
Your other watches, unfortunately, are not in that category. There are dealers who will take them, but quite a few who would hard pass on some, if not all. It’s just the nature of the market and what the dealers focus is in terms of brands they prefer to sell. So you will need to sort out receptive dealers who also have an LV that would trade for those much slower selling, but possibly high margin references. You could sell them yourself, but that is a pita and you will certainly need to add $$$. |

ok, here's my take. you've already solved the problem. in fact, you don't have a problem, or even an issue. you've got the green light to get LV, so go and get it. then wear it, live with it, see how it impacts your feelings about the rest of your collection. in the meantime, you can float some emails to some dealers and test the market. you'll eventually settle on what to do. and who knows, maybe you'll just end up doing nothing and have a larger watch collection when all is said and done. only time will tell. keep us posted. you got this!

Got to be one of your subs and possibly all of your Seiko.
Correct me if I’m wrong but you currently have 3 subs and a SD4K and you are thinking about bringing in yet another sub? Trade out of one of them for sure. The YM does indeed add a bit of colour and variety to the collection so I’d keep that. The SD4k is another option to trade but I wouldn’t because it adds something to your collection that a submariner doesn’t, albeit they are fairly similar. I also have a 124060 and find it to be a perfect daily, it’s perfect size and I love the options I get regarding on the fly adjustment on the clasp. I just wish Rolex offered the LV in a no date variant, I’d gobble that up for sure! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

In my opinion: Keep all the Rolex.
From what you've wrote: The Navitimer and Seamaster 300m need to go. You could let the Seiko go too. |

I’m not really a seiko or breitling guy - so my vote is dump those three lol.
Or the SD4K given the JC which is a killer watch |

I would sell all of the Rolex and Seikos you listed in their entirety - consolidate the collection. Less is more - you'll enjoy your LV more and your wife will be extremely pleased/happy to boot.
