Am I missing something? Daytona.
Hi lads,
Been thinking about this for a few months. There are a few Rolex styles that i'm not massively mad on but I just don't get the whole Daytona thing. Every now and then I'll see a pic of a white face on s/s and think 'Not bad', couplea actors had them back in the day. That's as far as it goes. I'm not a fan of the three button, three dial look. Over busy and reminds me of Mickey Mouse from some angles. What am I missing? Is it all hype and people jumping on a bandwagon? Can't be, help me out, is this just eye of the beholder? Fair play to those who like em and have em. |

Agreed!
I very much like the toolwatch-style vintages ones in steel, but that's about it. I am not interested in the glamour associated with many of the rest of them. |

I don’t get it either. I’ll take a Speedmaster over a Daytona any day of the week.

Do a quick search, this topic has been discussed in detail hundreds of times in this forum.
Daytona is not all hype, it has been around for a long time. Green watches and watches named after comic book characters, that is another story. Enjoy! |

Daytona is one of the most iconic watches ever made, along with the Submariner.
I don't get the point of this thread, if you don't like the watch, don't buy it. |

Henry Ford once said about his model T, “you can have any color you want as long as it’s black”!
Everything isn’t for everyone and frankly if you don’t get Daytona, it’s you not the watch… Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Redundant thread. Benefit of doubt, search is sometimes difficult to use.
The 116518LN “Paul Newman” (though I disagree with the name) is my only grail. When possible, I will own one. SS, I would pass on from AD. Just not a fan. Regardless, I wouldn’t start a thread on it, I would just not buy it . |

It seems you just don't like the watch. However, many people do.

If everyone liked the same things it would be a boring world.
Nothing wrong with not liking it. Just stick to what you do. |

It's one of two things. Either:
1) Rolex and/or the Gray Dealer Syndicate have manufactured false hype over a mediocre watch for 30 years straight, or 2) Not everyone likes the same thing

This repeated one, kind of begs me to ask, why don't you care for the new references as they are simply "improved" over their predecessors....? I mean the WG Daytona Steel dialed 116509-0072 is a super close resemblance of the late 60's piece. To the ignorant, it might be mistaken for an older model.... I do spend time on a race track so that's my connection to the Daytona. I'm aware of your Daytona inheritance from your father and how lucky you are to have it. But why "insult" us newer enthusiast with your repeated distaste.... From Mr. Insult |

Initially it seems it was coveted by collectors for its cool history, and function.
Now it’s coveted by the social media crowd as the ultimate hype/flex piece |

There is nothing to get. The Daytona is one of those watches that when you do get it you won’t need any explanation why. A reason the Daytona runs above other models is it brings out such passion. Sometimes that emotion is negative but mostly it’s positive for most people. People love to hate this watch now because it’s so popular and the watch is left a innocent victim. Much like the way the “pretty popular girl” is considered a threat by other woman.

If I had a dollar for every time I've read "buy the hype to wear the hype" or "86,400 seconds in a day" or "££££$$$$$€€€€" I could buy a 6263!

Your tastes may change over time regarding the Daytona as mine did.
I remember seeing the Daytona on the cover of WatchTime back when Rolex introduced the 4130 movement. I thought it looked pretty good, but nothing I was going to chase after. In 2015 I saw both the white and black dial Daytonas in an AD case (remember those days?) and my indifference was reaffirmed. However, in 2016 when the ceramic stainless Daytona was released I found myself smitten. It took 4 years of waiting to get one, but it is one of my favorites in my small collection. |

I'm not quite sure where you're getting the overly "busy" look from. It's a chronograph, and if you compare it to other chronographs of a similar caliber you'll notice the Daytona is on the more minimalist side of the spectrum. The sizing it great, it's slim, the dial is not cluttered with a Date window, it has a great movement and huge history in general.
For someone shopping specifically for a chronograph this is almost always the best choice. (leaving out the ridiculous unobtainium issue). |

I don't like the hype part but love the watch! It's the most comfortable in my opinion of all the sports watches. But hey, that's why there are options.

That's your opinion. In my eyes it's ugly and way too much going on the dial and I don't care for chronograph. Way over hyped and way over priced. You could give me one and I wouldn't wear it, just flip it for a couple nice Rolex watches..JMHO..

Just my humble opinion. The Daytona is in my eyes is a very badly designed
cronograph.Any watch that is difficult to read, has a design fault in my eyes. i have owned a ton of Rolex watches including the Daytona. It is very well made, and will last for several life times.I think its popularity today has got more to do with hype, than the reality of the watch. I found it very difficult to read the time, and i know that many other people have the same problem with this model. |

People like different watches for different reasons, that is why there is so much choice for any watch buyer.
OP you don’t like the Daytona, that’s fine I’m not it’s greatest fan either but others love them hence it’s super high price away from the AD’s. I prefer the look of the TT Daytona compared to the SS version but my Speedy is more me than the Daytona. And that’s what is so great about watches, we don’t have to like the same watches, we can choose to collect and wear whatever we want. There are no rights or wrongs just buy what you like and be happy.
