I think Rolex has just pared down the number of variations that appear on the dealer websites. Any configuration with multiple bezel/dial variations is missing at least some: DD, DJ, OP, YM, Daytona. Every metal option is represented, but within each, there's a need to limit the number of versions shown. Otherwise it would stretch on forever.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that it's because the two serve different purposes: learning everything one can about Rolexes and getting people to go to a store and try/buy Rolexes. Many people going to the Rolex website are also probably using the configurator function, which isn't on the AD sites.

If it gets discontinued, I doubt it'll be the only color to be dropped, and I would imagine dropped colors will be replaced 1:1 with new ones. They aren't "limited editions" per se, but perhaps they're each meant to have a limited shelf life... Lots of other colors that I'm sure will become just as popular just as quickly and this becomes the OP's "thing" (new colors replacing old ones every couple years).

i think it would just confuse customers when certain variations were not shown on AD's website but actually available to buy! why would Rolex do this on purpose? doesnt make any sense to me.

Rolex has people excited about oyster perpetuals in all sizes. Remind me again why they’d screw with that?

Rolex very rarely does something on a short run particularly when it’s a hit. I’m not buying it. If they do it’s a drastic departure from the Rolex way.

The question is the best way to continue that excitement: keep the current “hot” color, and ride that train all the way in, or establish a pattern of swapping them out every few years and “when they’re gone, they’re gone”?

It’s how you get collectors interested in continuing to buy, vs speculation.

They don’t have to do that they are Rolex. If this was omega sure or grand seiko sure.

They can make the same watch for 20 years and it sells for 3x on secondary.

These wouldn't be "special editions" the way Omega does, just an unwritten rule: limited shelf life.

That last part won't last forever, though. So the question is whether the bright colors themselves have long-term staying power, or if the idea of new colors every few years is what keeps the line of interest into the future.

I know exactly what you’re saying but this is Rolex not a fashion line that changes colorways yearly.

We shall see. I’m betting these are still in the catalogue for years to come. I also bet they remain desirable.

I'm sure the SA is telling you that because the AD intends to sell them through the backdoor for ridiculous money. They don't want you low margins, when they can make 1000% markup

And I've completed my 11th year here on TRF... And I still don't know this somehow. Ok, taking a deep breath... What's an "SA"?

That's just it: historically, there have been tweaks to dials all the time, year to year. Didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, but they happened. It would just appear more systematic now because everyone is paying so much attention.

You're absolutely right, Rolex doesn't typically configure watches to suit trends, but it also refreshes things on a somewhat regular basis.
