Do Rolex ADs judge you by your watch?

So in the ever so fun pursuit of trying to get Rolex at retail, I'm wondering if what watch you have on makes any difference from the SA perspective?

So in one situation this is clear to me - you have previously bought a piece from said SA, so wearing that same piece back to the store is a good move as it shows you kept the piece etc.

But what about a first time visit? Do you think an AD/SA cares if you have nothing, versus say a PM piece or even a Rainbow Daytona?

Do you think you get treated different or it changes the options available to you?

I'm asking because I very rarely wear my nice pieces when I go into ADs and my wife thinks I'm an idiot.

Maybe you guys would like to pile on?

I’ve never been into a Rolex AD where their eyes haven’t made it abundantly clear they want to see what’s on your wrist. I’m assuming a lot of it is whether or not to take you seriously especially with the market right now.

I think there is a 10% chance wearing a previous purchase will help your cause and a 0% chance it will hurt it so you should wear it.

Not just Rolex ADs but most salespeople in general will be qualifying you from the moment you introduce yourself.

With watches there’s even more f****ery with them gauging where you got said piece and if you frequent the grey market. It’a become tiresome.

It can't hurt to wear a nice piece to an AD right? shows your a serious buyer and can afford this stuff? I think it would be better than going in with a casio or apple watch on?

I went to my AD to ask to be put on the list and to look at a Speedmaster.

I took my 116520 off, set it down and he picked it up and examined it carefully. He complimented the watch we had a nice discussion about why I liked that model and my professional connection to them. No talk of grey or where I bought it.

Tried on the Speedy, and gave him my info.

It can't hurt.

Completely agree that wearing a certain time piece can really only help your cause unless you are pretentious about it.

You did mention you rarely wear your nice pieces to the AD. What is your reasoning?

Right so say I rock up with a Blue SkyD.

If I got it from grey, that’s not a good look?

But then if I got it from an AD the SA would wonder why don’t I just go back to that other AD.

So in that scenario does it hurt?

Or does the SA say well this person is serious and that outweighs watch provenance.

I dunno I guess some irrational resistance to being sized up. So I guess I know the answer to my own Q.

Absolutely can only help. I wear a vintage Coke when I go into a Rolex AD. This allows for the upside of a Rolex owner but not the downside of something like the aforementioned Sky-Dweller, which may possibly raise an eyebrow?

Yeah feeling like you are being sized up is not something I would want when going into the AD, but I guess it is human nature. I say wear the nice pieces proudly because life is too short. Haha. Enjoy brotha!

I’ve worn different ones i have to the AD and they do notice I have several models. Did it help me get another one, probably. But didn’t help going to a new AD at all.

First walked in 2020 wearing Quartz Tag-Heuer and bought a pre-owned Speedy. Came back a few months later and traded Speedy for used YM 40mm Platinum Dial no rehaut to solidify the relationship.

I agree with your wife. Wear the baddest piece you got when you go in. Be it AP, PP,RM or whatever. It will show you are not a flipper, are a watch lover and have the potential to be a repeat customer. The AD holy trinity.

I wore a TT daytona to an ad and when asked I said it was from grey. I said I had to go grey because no one would sell me anything. So guess what they started selling me stuff :).

Any model purchased from an AD or discontinued, vintage or neo-vintage is ok to wear in. Any hot model purchased from a grey is inviting the wrong conversation.

Put your watch in your pocket and leave it there while you're at the AD.

That removes that whole topic and you can do what you came in to do, which is to shop for a new watch.

It might help to bring in your bank statement and put that on the counter while you negotiate.

Well that’s kinda been my approach in wearing no watch.
