Rolex Salespeople Buying Hot Watches For Themselves

Came across this interesting post about a sneaky tactic Rolex salespeople may be using to buy hot watches themselves to sell on the gray market.

From a Reddit thread on r/scams:

"Buddy wants me to buy a Rolex with his money. Apparently, one of his sibling works at a a Rolex store but employees and their family members are not allowed to make any store purchases. So he wants me to open an Rolex Store account under my name, and he’ll give me the $9,500 to buy the watch."

If true, this seems awfully shady.

Problem with the world today and low quality information overload. No evidence, no references, but nonsense gets assumed as reality.

From the few people I know who work at AD's, it's extremely difficult for them to buy Rolexes.

Nothing in this Reddit post indicates the “buddy” plans to flip the watch.

These theories are getting old.

Rolex allows corporate employee to acquire some models at a discount, with tons of string attached.

Anything outside of this would be a severely punished offense IMO.

The SA I worked with bought one and wears it at work. I don’t see any problem with it—he had to wait just like everyone else. If I recall, they do limit what he could get, ie I don’t think he could order a ceramic Daytona.

Staff in an AD aren't allowed to buy a watch, they can buy a watch to use for work but that has to be written down over 5 years and then it becomes theirs.

The only time I've seen a white dial Daytona is on the wrist of a sales assistant, they had worked for the firm for 10 years before they were able to buy it then had to wear it for another 5 before, when I saw it it was beat up to hell as the SA told me that it goes everywhere with her and has a hard life, it was 15 months at that point.

Whether true or not, ADs are very sensitive about buying new hot models, even if they have waited as long as their customer because of the blow-back from customers on them when seen wearing the hot model.

These are difficult times. Try not to lay blame or "figure out" who's doing what to whom.

anyway
this can be taken to another level of shady
the one who is to buy the watch ... either pockets the money or buys watch and flips it and keeps the profit

Went into a boutique and the salesman was wearing a stainless daytona and basically bragging about how they had the opportunity to buy a blue stainless skydweller but didn't like it.

All the SA’s in my AD/Boutique are wearing Rolex. My SA usually wears his Hulk, occasionally a tutone Datejust. Another there wears a SD-43 and another a RG Daydate with olive dial.

My SA was wearing a TT GMT last week. She told me that it was originally purchased for her husband about 3 years ago and yes, she wasn't allowed to buy a full SS one, but the TT was fine. 3 years later, he decides it's a bit too flashy for him, so she gets the GMT and he apparently got something a bit more understated to replace it.

My guess is that if the owner found out that SA would be turfed, or seriously reprimanded

At my Rolex boutique, every SA wears SS or TT Rolex. I think they are allowed to purchase one at a discount every 5 years for themselves/their family members.

i don't believe it at all. a while back, i asked an independent ad if he would sell me the platona off his wrist. he replied that he bought it at cost for personal use and that rolex would be very upset if they found out he sold it. it's just not worth it to dealers to lose their franchise over a few bucks.

I think it's rather sad that an employee isn't given a opportunity to buy 1 (just 1) after they pass probation or something... do you want the SA to serve a customer wearing a g shock? I guess it would need to be on a purchase plan or something as a SA isn't likely to be able to buy a 5-10k watch just like that...

Interesting - One of the ADs I pop into the SA always has a nice Rolex on, and this was pre-exhibition models...do you think he is wearing inventory from the safe? One was a Cermit and the other a SS Daytona...so we're talking the hottest models.

Rolex Salespeople Buying Hot Watches For Themselves

What a lot of you are misunderstanding is. The SA went to a family member, to find a buyer so the SA or the “family member” could get the watch. The SA isn’t buying this watch through Rolex, they’re essentially allocating it to a third party and paying for it, bypassing all of Rolex’s safeguards*, for their own personal gain.

*I even laughed when I typed it.

I don’t believe it without a legit source, however, it could be very plausible. I would be curious to know how many prior Rolex the “family member” has purchased.

The two regular ADs that I go to and the sales persons I deal with both have their own Rolex but they have owned it for awhile.

According to my cousin's friend's boyfriend's uncle...

Shouldn't we make it a policy not to post rumors until our 1,000th post?

My SA who I’ve dealt with for over 10 plus years had to wait a loooooong time to get his.

Granted it’s a Blue SkyD. I’ve never bothered to ask him the in’s and out’s/do’s and dont’s. Just happy for him because I know he’s wanted it for a while and just recently got it

hahaha I was just about to make a post on this.

Popped into my AD just for a chat and my SA mentioned that the Goldsmith nearby allow their staff to buy anything and that the 2 managers are sporting black and white dial daytonas. Waited a year each. No restrictions.

His AD only allow 1 purchase and that's after lengthy consideration. I spotted one of his colleagues with a tiffany blue dial OP 41 around early last 2021. That staff member is not allowed to buy any more Rolexes. Their view is it looks bad if they have the hottest models or even hot-ish, and their clients and visitors struggle
