I had a 24 year old Datejust shipped to me and get dinged $67 in taxes and $25 in duties.
The invoice from FEDEX reads "Value for duty $489.55". I cannot recall if I only had it declared as a $500 piece or not... It seems apparent, this was the case. So it would be very expensive if you purchased a watch and had it fully insured. |

Close ... ;) Depending on who is the shipping carrier, these are the full fees when importing a watch into Canada. 1. Duty = 5% 2. GST + PST 3. Postal Fee (minimal amount of about $5-10 if using USPS) 4. Brokerage fees (if using UPS or Fedex) - this is the KILLER fee and varies based on the declared value of the contents. The higher the value, the larger the brokerage fee. Such a rip-off. This is why I try to avoid using UPS between US/Canada at ALL COSTS. |

FEDEX bad choice

DHL, USPS, UPS etc just comes straight through. If Fedex being over zealous in performing the duty of a tax collector? |

Absolutely. I got into a major argument with UPS a short while ago. I'd sent a watch to Chicago for a repair estimate, they couldn't service the watch and sent it back. UPS billed me a huge amount in brokerage fees for the return of my own watch. It ended up with me telling them I'd see them in court. Haven't heard back from them.
