Does anybody own a GMT II (non-C) as well as a Sub?
I have an Explorer as well as a Sub-date. I've been SERIOUSLY thinking about getting one of the watches with the 4th hand, but can't decide on the non-C GMT Master II or the Explorer II. I don't like the IIc model.
I made a similar post about this a little while ago, but now I'm specifically asking if the GMT II (I like Coke) is too similar to the Sub. The SS bezel on the Explorer II really makes it look like a completely different watch than the Sub, but this isn't the case with the GMT Master. I'm also wondering if the GMT II is too flashy to wear daily. Becaues it's instantly recognizable as a Rolex, will I be at increased risk for getting mugged?

Uhhhhh . . .
No, you will not be mugged wearing a GMT II Coke bezel any more than you would another watch. Honestly, you could go months before anyone even noticed you were wearing a Rolex, unless YOU pointed it out. People in this day and age are simply too self-absorbed to notice. The GMT II is very different from the sub. The bezel is completely distinct, with the perfectly spaced, even numbers symmetrically proportioned all around. Plus, the fourth hand, in red on the II, further separates it from the Sub. Buy what you want. However, if you settle on the Explorer II, remember to accept nothing less than a VERY hefty discount. They are out there. Good time to buy either, but Exp. IIs just don't do very well on resale. The discounts on these are usually higher than GMTs. I suggest the GMT Master II, with its amazing versatility. I prefer the IIC; however, no Rolex watch is as versatile as the Rolex GMT Master II (three watches in one!). Good luck. |

Hello Dave,
I have the Sub Date & GMT Master I (Pepsi). IMHO they are not similar - 2 completely different timepieces. In short, the Sub weighs more & has a higher depth rating than the GMT. However, the GMT has the advantage of keeping a second time zone. Both are great watches, but each has its own intended purpose. Here are few wrist shots for comparison of the two timepieces. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I would agree that the red/blue or blk/red bezel is more eye catching than the Sub's black (with the exception of the green (LV) of course). However, I do not think that the GMT's red/blk or blue/red bezel would increase your chances of being mugged. It all depends on the situation/environment/ & how you conduct yourself. Let us know what you decide on. |

I know about the different functions and details of the Sub vs GMT Master.
However, I do think that they look pretty similar, with the exception of the bezel and the GMT hand.

I recently added the Pepsi to my collection and wish I had done so earlier. As much as it looks similar to a Sub, it feels very different and the bezel is just so sharp and outstanding.

4th hand, they do look very much alike. So, which one - the GMT or Explorer? |

I actually like the fact that they are similar, having common features but then subtle differences.
A none WIS may say why have you got the same watch but in a different colour. You obviously know the differences in form and function. I bet of the 2 watches you prefer the GMT to the Explorer! PeterT |

The GMT is much lighter and the twinlock make it look smaller. Apart from the black dial and the diameter, they are not similar at all IMO.

I bought a GMTII with a black bezel 5 years ago and think this combo looks the best - the red 24 hour hand stands out whilst the watch maintains a subtle refined look. I've tried a black/red bezel insert but recently went back in black and that's the way it will stay.
I bought my second Rolex 3 months ago and opted for the Sub LV - the green bezel looks stunning in daylight and almost-but-not-quite as stunning under artificial light. I'm not a great fan of the diver's extension function as it makes the clasp a lot more bulky than the one on the GMT. I do like the slightly larger triplock crown though... If ever I'm in the market for a 3rd Rolex it will probably be an Explorer 2 with a white face. It's unusual design is growing on me daily. If I had to choose between my Sub LV and my GMTII I'd keep the GMT simply for the red hand on all black, and of course the extra functionality of tracking multiple time zones... |

Yes I have both. The GMT2's bezel can be swapped around - red/black, blue/black or all black - so it's a flexible watch that doesn't really look like the Sub. Also, you can fit it with the Jubilee bracelet, which would further change the looks.

Go for a GMT II... you can wear it anytime, anywhere.
If you make a quick search you'll find out i along with other members wear them all over the surface of the globe and not only in the lobby of 5 stars hotel !

I have owned an original Pepsi GMT 1675 since 1976. It is a wonderfully beautiful watch. I have gotten several random complements on the watch but have never gotten any for my 5513 Sub. The GMT is a very dressy watch.

I own the TT Sub and SS GMT II. The Sub and the GMT II are probably the 2 most popular watches.

Get the Explorer II...... It's a perfect fit between the Explorer and Sub...
It's also practically indestructible with the Stainless Bezel... If you are active at all, you will like that.........and with the time-zone function, it is the perfect adventurer/traveler watch.

I own both, having bought the Sub first - and after having both for a while, now feel that they are a bit too similar. The sub was my first love (my favorite professional model) and I just found myself reaching for it moreso than the GMTII. I am now selling the GMTII for something different.

I have both Sub Date and GMTII. I can't part with the sub becaus it's so classic and feels great on my wrist. I prefer the GMTII over the GMTIIc for versatility. For me the GMTIIc is too flashy. And, you can purchase all 3 GMTII bezels inexpensively and change for different looks.

Expy II certainly has a much distinct look and it has the GMT function.
The white dial will certainly set it apart from Sub.
