Purchasing discontinued OP 39?

More of a lurker here as of late but I did post about 3 years ago when I was debating a purchase between the newly redesigned (2019) Omega Seamaster Diver and the Oyster Perpetual 39mm. I eventually did go with the Omega and still love it despite my wrist shrinking (due to about 60 lbs of much needed weight loss ) from approx 7.25 inches to 6.75 inches.

Since the OP was my runner up choice and I’ve wanted to add a blue dial option to the black omega diver, I am revisiting the OP, however the 39 has been replaced by the 41 which I am not a huge fan of. The dial on the 39 is cleaner and the touches of green keep it a bit more on the casual side IMO. Also not a big fan of the double stick design at 3, 6, 9.

I’ve also considered the YM 37 in rhodium since my wrist is probably small enough for it now.

That being said, is it foolish for lack of a better word to purchase a discontinued model like the OP 39? Or is this more of a “just buy what you like and don’t worry about it”?

Any and all insight is greatly appreciated!

Personally, I'd have no issue purchasing a discontinued model if it was still sitting in the original AD's case. However that won't happen, and you're subject to the secondary market. If the plan was to buy pre-owned anyways, then go for it, it's a great watch.

I'm not a double baton fan, either, but if I otherwise liked the watch I'd go for it, however with your wrist size I'd be looking at the 36. It may actually wear larger than the YM37, due to the wide bezel on the latter.

The OP39 is a beautiful classic piece and a very good buy at its price point. I have 2...a blue and rhodium ....gave the blue to one of my sons and I keep the Rhodium and every time I wear it I get used to having it on my wrist and feel it is one of the most comfortable, understated and versatile watches I own. You cannot go wrong with this if you get it at a decent price....I got both of mine from AD back in 2019 or so and no regrets. I think the 39 has much better proportions than the new 41 for whatever that's worth and I know that there are others who feel the same but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that's why you should buy what looks good to you.

I used to own an OP39 white. Perfect proportions and super clean dial design. I agree that the double batons on the OP41 are not as good.

Have you tried the YM37? You might find it wears pretty small on a 6.75 wrist.

Thank you! Yes, prices seem more normal compared to some of the other “hotter” references.

I’d be open to a really clean pre owned or I have seen some NIB still but usually with a decent premium over the going market rate.

I’ve heard that as well regarding the DJ vs YM. I’ve tried a DJ 36 on and it was fine, but definitely a tad on the smaller side.

I also wear a Tissot Carson Powermatic 80 on leather for the very very infrequent times I dress up a bit. That is listed as 40mm (feels a bit smaller) and it looks great on my wrist.

The rhodium was also an early contender back when I was originally in the market a few years ago. Both are super nice. Agreed on the 39 vs 41 proportions. Not sure why they felt they needed to revamp the line in general

Actually, what you want is a very clean last generation (116000) OP36 “blue Explorer” model. Basically, OP36 with blue 3-6-9 dial. But that generation wrote bigger, too.

OP, here is an interesting side by side review of the 39 vs. 41.

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/in...r-perpetual-41

And the author feel that the 39 is the classic.

The so called 41 is really 39.5 so assuming the 39 is really 39 I would consider them interchangeable.

What about the OP 36? That’s a great choice for a 6.75 inch wrist and there are few real nice dials

Just to update this thread..

So I made my way to the local AD just to get a feel for the new OP if they had any in stock.

Everything they had was the dreaded "exhibition model" but I did get to try on the new 41 and 36. I must say, the double batons are not as intrusive in person and the watch felt great in both sizes.

The 41 looked best (sorry, did not get a chance to snap some wrist shots although I should have ).

My name was already in their system from some previous visits so they attached the reference to my name in their database, and said they can definitely get the 41 OP in blue, but it will be approx 8 months and also said they are getting more in stock lately so maybe sooner?

Super nice staff considering no purchase history and all. Hoping for the best!

I agree, it's by far my favourite six-digit Rolex. Looks like a five-digit in proportions, understated and very cool. Out of my three Rolexes, it's the one I wear the most. I have the blue dial, but love the black and the white as well.

My Coral 41 they say is really 39.5. Are the 39 really 39, 37.5 or something else. I love the grape 39 and almost pulled trigger but I wanted a new watch.
