Inventory and Greys
so I was cruising around looking at listings, since there is always so much talk around pricing going up or down with greys and the marketplace. Just peaks my interest. While viewing the DSW website I noticed something interesting. It shows that there are 220 milgauss listings but when you click on the inventory it only displays 4 listings. Same goes for the DeepSea listings. It shows 255 pieces of inventory but only displays 3 of them.
I know many of you will say that this is a glitch but I think the story goes deeper. The DSW site is a Wordpress website that uses woocommerce as its backend for inventory and a shopping cart that integrates a Credit card and PayPal processing. Most of the inventory management system, accounting and processing runs off of plugins. Although yes this is a glitch, the inventory number needs to be pulled from somewhere, in this case it would be pulled from the amount of units held in the system. I believe this means that there are actually 200 plus watches of inventory for each of these references but they are only displaying a few. Or it could be that the category itself being Rolex has almost 500 watches in inventory. This may go to prove what many of you think - greys hold inventory and leak it to control pricing. This also suggests what many of you have been saying, Greys are not buying inventory as they were before. If the stock levels are like this and you’re holding inventory that you can’t move, you’re definitely not happy. Although this is just a one off case, and can be considered anecdotal evidence, no one can argue that DSW maybe one of the more significant Grey dealers in the game. One could make an assumption that other dealers have similar inventory and sales issues due to the current climate. Hopefully those of you that are in the market will hold out and not buy until these prices drop. Attached below are 2 screen shots. https://www.flickr.com/photos/195879.../shares/5967fz |

Greys are definitely sitting on a lot of inventory, that’s for sure.

It’s just a glitch. It showed that he had over 1,400 Subs on the site yesterday. It’s an IT issue.

David Khalil on YouTube posted a recent video showing he has 15 Explorers. I'd believe overstocked greys have about that many, 15-25 maybe, per reference/model but not in the hundreds.

I thought that was views, not stock.
But yes, most greys don’t list multiples. |

Seems like a glitch, but greys are definitely not buying. I can personally attest that WOS/Analog Shift, Crown & Caliber, and DSW aren’t even giving offers for watches that they were snapping up at well over MSRP just 6 weeks ago.

This would be over $3,000,000 tied up in the Milgauss model only. Doesnt seems reasonable. |

DSW has a lot of Platona inventory now at pretty great prices (relatively).

It does say 255 next to Sea Dweller Deepsea and 220 for Milgauss, but I gotta believe that is a miscounting of Deepseas and Milgausses (may be the counter was aggregating postings?)
But I also have a hard time believing they only have 3 Deepseas, with all 3 being James Cameron models. The truth is probably somewhere in between(?) |

Just out of curiosity, I priced my DJ41 at Bob’s to see how much they would quote me for it, and they said they weren’t buying DJs at that time due to overstock. HODINKEE only offered credit lol.

I think he may of been looking at the views icon. I couldn't imagine they would have more than 50 of a particular reference.

I noticed that as well but with some of those supposed inventory numbers they would be sitting on tens of millions of dollars of watches. Seems unlikely.

3 mill tied up in milgauss inventory Would be retarded . I’m fairly familiar with these kind of Wordpress sites and I can say that the 255 is supposed to be the actual inventory per model, it’s not views. Views would be on the backend of woo commerce inside the analytics tab. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

He’s a market maker there’s no telling what he has. 3MM in a reference doesn’t seem crazy high to me.

I hope Rolex presses ahead with production increases so average punters like myself will have a chance to acquire the pieces I want at (or close to) MSRP soon. Grey dealers and the second hand market will take care of themselves as always.
I understand during the boom, AD's had no choice but to sell in bundle deals and to flippers and grey dealers as secondary market prices were too high to ignore. Many AD's sold to flippers and grey dealers at 50%-150% over MSRP to make ends meet to compensate for significantly reduced supply from Rolex. Enforcement of sales practices by Rolex only go so far to weed out the naughty AD's and help control prices and distribution of stock. Now is the time for Rolex to go full steam ahead with their production and give their AD's visibility on (increased) supplies so AD's can run their business accordingly. One last thing, I hope Rolex would stop making Tudors for a quarter or two (a full year would be even better). Nobody I know wants or misses Tudors!!! Use the production capacity to produce more Rolexes. |

If DSW is mentioned 3 times in a thread a mod comes swooping down and locks it to protect the greys, I will give this one a few hours before it goes the way of all the others that had similarly sensible discussion.

Prices are heading back to MRSP. We will have watches back in display cases at ADs again. Great news for watch enthusiasts. A message board on the internet isn't going to change that. Dealers want to unload their stock on uninformed buyers whilst they still can. Hence, threads about prices falling rapidly being locked. Prices dropping and availability at ADs is the most important topic regarding Rolex after the last few years we have been through, hence the massive interest in those threads. People could just skip those threads if they wanted to or create their own discussions. But It isn't about that. It is what it is.

The number of pages most likely includes listings for watches that have sold. Those pages are still in the system but do not display because they are not active. I could easily believe that DSW has had that many watches listed over the life of his site.
On the other hand I counted a local used market's inventory recently and they had 65 active listings for the 116500 in black dial alone, so there is a ton of inventory out there (but not quite that much!). |
