Stolen Daytona

My Daytona that I bought new in the 80s was stolen by a roommate in Atlanta also in the 80s... I bought it from a Rolex dealer in perimeter mall either Bailey, Banks and Biddle ... now that the watch is worth so much money, I'd like to try to recover it ... with modern communications, it seems possible... obviouslyly there is a reward

Good luck with your search.

Case law, especially if the watch has changed hands several times over the years, may not be on your side.

Mine got stolen about 16 years ago and I'm still waiting for the phone call from Rolex. Your 33 plus years out and just asking now. Don't hold your breath but good luck.

If you still have the original receipt and paperwork you might have a chance.

Reporting it to the Police and getting in on record with the serial numbers as stolen is key. Report it as stolen to Rolex Corporate as well. By this time it might have been serviced there at least once. You are going to have to prove it was stolen and that you didn't sell it and are trying to get it back. GOOD LUCK!

Watch was stolen by your roommate in the 80’s and now you decide it’s a good time to look for it when you’ve known the roommates name all along?
That is some seriously passive thinking, but good luck anyway...

Pretty much no chance

You could have logged it as stolen with a crime number back then. Rolex would have acknowledged this and flagged it once it came in for service which really is 50/50 at best in your life time.

Trying to find it without a crime number is going to be seriously hard. Plus you will have to buy it back at todays prices. Don’t think Rolex will acknowledge the theft now. I’m sure lost and stolen if not claimed within say 10 years falls out of your ownership - at least in the Uk

Now you wake up and decide to look for it? Did you do anything to try and recover it over-the past 40 years? If so, then good luck. If not, then write it off, chances are slim since it might have changed hands numerous times by now. Even still…it has been 40 years!!! Not 4.

I'm sorry but this thread is hard to believe......

First time posters always ring an alarm to begin with.

Now some 30+ years later simply because of the Daytona values the OP joins up....

If it was known who allegedly stole it, why not have chased down that lead years ago...

Was it Bailey, Banks, or Biddle....

I can go on.....

Tooooo, many red flags IMO, calling BS

Edit: What's the REWARD??? LOL

Bailey Banks & Biddle was an upscale chain jewelry store with a long history. Many of their stores were indeed Rolex AD’s. They were owned by Zale’s and sold to a conglomerate in the mid 2000’s.

Without the an original invoice with the serial number or a police report, how would you positively identify it as yours?

if you didn't report it stolen back when it happened and you don't have proof it was your room mate, you have literally no case and no one will help you as the other side can say you sold it to them and now you are just trying to steal it back.

It’s gone….I had an amazing collection of Zeppelin LPs in the 80’s. They’re gone too ( same roommate?)!
All kidding aside, if there was no recording if the theft when it happened (police report), not sure how this could ever be substantiated.

This is one of those posts with virtually no info, from someone who has posted a grand total of once on TRF, who will likely never post again. So it should generate about 12 pages of responses!

I have an old friend who hid a four digit Daytona somewhere in the insulation of his attic back in the 80’s in the midst of cocaine fueled paranoia. He’s much better now but never found it again, last search right before he moved out of the house a few years later. Maybe some future house flipper will find it years from now.

Atlanta in the 80s. . .

I'd like to think this was stolen at Riverbend Apartments, right before heading to supper at the Lark and the Dove, then taking in an Atlanta Knights game at the Omni, followed by a late night game of backgammon at Gammons.

Like all of these 1980s Atlanta institutions, however, this watch is gone forever.

You have a better chance finding a quarter you put in a pay phone from the 80s. It’s never going to happen unless you have the police report and serial number. It’s been 30+ years, it would have been found by now.
