As predicted: 100% of respondents voted for the watch they prefer. Therefore, the advice is unanimous. Buy the Watch you like best!

Objectively, both work for a wide range of wrist sixes because both are appropriately sized for their intended purposes - which makes sense since neither was designed (originally) as a fashion statement (though the Sub was arguably enlarged a bit to become one).

You won’t have a problem with the size of the sub. I have a 124060 with a 6.3 in wrist. But if you like they more classic style of the EXP1 go for it.

I have a 6.5 inch wrist or maybe even a touch below that and this is exactly what I found. Everyone’s wrist is a bit different (and also their taste for what is just right in terms of size is different) but IMO you’ve touched on a pretty good barometer.

FWIW to the OP, I dislike the big watch trend.

My wrist is 6.5-inch as well and the 40mm Submariner looks great on my wrist,
On the other hand, I tried a 42mm Explorer-2 recently and it wastoo big.

Do you want people to know you’re wearing a Rolex or not? Some people need everyone to know, some people want no one to know, others don’t care either way

Small wrist, explorer 1. The sub will look enormous.

Imagine you can get both over time. Which would you want first? Get that one.

I think it depends on what else you have in your collection and whether you plan to buy a sub date, black or kermit, in the future. If this is your one and done watch then sub no date for sure. If it's part of a collection, possibly explorer.

I forgot to mention I have a 40 mm GMT 116710 LN. I suppose this it is too similar to the submariner and I should go for the explorer?

I know not everyone will agree with me, but if you have a GMT, I didn’t see much point in adding a submariner to the collection. The overall look is so similar.

Same feeling here. I have a Submariner so my next watch would be one with white dial. I am deciding now between the Cartier Santos and DJ41, both with white dial.

I own the 124060 and my wife owns the 39mm Explorer. Both the watches you are considering are fantastic watches. The Submariner is possibly more instantly recognisable and therefore noticeable?

You really can’t go wrong either. Remember though you don’t have a glidelock clasp with the Explorer. I find it quite useful but I can live without it.

Wait… you have the blackblackblack? It’s the exact same size as the new submariner. Do you feel your blackblackblack is too big?

I have both the sub and gmt. The glidelock is amazing. Both belong in a collection and I would argue that they should be the first 2 Rolexes for most people

Explorer is the more versatile, blends in, and avoids useless complications. The sub stands out, has more water resistance, and is heavier to carry. How much do each of those factors matter to you. Although I personally prefer the 39mm Explorer, I’d still chose the 36 over a sub. For me personally, the Explorer 1 is the closest any company has come to the perfect watch. Everyone here is biased, find your bias and be happy.

I love the explorer. If you don’t care about having a complication, that’s the way to go.

No date Submariner Or Explorer 1

Your wrist size plus the fact that you already own the black GMT make the new explorer a slam dunk IMO.

Plus what yellow said above …… although I own both ( 36 and 39mm version) and much prefer the 124260 for it’s smaller size , AR , longer power reserve and gloss dial.

It’s magnificent and just as comfortable and versatile as you have read

Plus with a little patience you can pick one up at retail.

….Save the drama - I’m just here for the photos….

Submariner. Don't worry about wrist size--my petite wife wears my 40mm Sub.

I have the current Explorer and a current Sub LV. No doubt I’d get the Sub. You can much more easily get the Explorer later if you still want it, and I don’t think owning both is entirely redundant.

Easy. X1. Road less traveled. It’s the most versatile and tough and adventurous and elegant watch made. And oh, Who doesn’t have a sub (including me)?

I agree with this except for choosing a 36mm Explorer over a Sub. I’ve had a 14060M and a 124060. Now I have a 214270 MKII and it’s perfection FOR ME. Try them on and see which one “sings the loudest” to YOU! Good luck!
